About the position

The MCCC Academic Counselor at Massasoit Community College plays a crucial role in advising students on academic plans, career exploration, and transfer processes. This position involves evaluating student admissions, monitoring academic progress, and providing support to ensure students meet their educational goals. The counselor will also participate in orientations and workshops, collaborate with faculty and departments, and stay updated on trends in academic advising and career development.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an Academic Advisor and assist students in developing academic plans of study.
  • Conduct career advising, assessments, and transfer advising for students.
  • Screen, interview, evaluate, and process incoming students for general studies competency and register them into appropriate academic curricula.
  • Evaluate admission applications, registration documents, transcripts, placement test scores, and transfer credits.
  • Advise students on academic plans, degree requirements, course selection, and transition issues.
  • Monitor academic progress of students and assist with course adjustments and obtaining developmental assistance.
  • Participate in new student orientations and Open House events, coordinating activities with other programs.
  • Perform administrative tasks related to department activities and partake in committees.
  • Make presentations and conduct academic informational sessions or workshops.
  • Refer students to other services and communicate with faculty and school officials as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison to an academic division, developing knowledge of its programs and career needs.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable laws and regulations related to academic advising and career development.
  • Research new trends in the profession and participate in professional organizations and training.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, or a closely related field.
  • Three years of experience in college admissions, academic advisement, career exploration, or program/project management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of online database systems such as Banner and Degree Works.
  • Understanding of current trends in academic advising and career exploration.
  • Experience working with diverse or non-traditional students.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, along with decision-making ability.
  • Commitment to the needs of youth and adults from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Benefits

  • Full-time benefited position with a salary range of $67,136 - $75,077 based on education and experience.
  • Eligibility for telework in accordance with the college's telework policy.
