About the position

The Telecommunications Directional Drill Operator-Locator at Mahaska Communications Group (MCG) is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of directional drilling equipment. This role involves locating the drill head, understanding elevation changes, and making informed decisions on drilling depths to avoid underground utilities while placing products underground. The position requires adherence to safety regulations and involves working on construction projects throughout MCG's service territory.

Responsibilities

  • Promote safety consciousness and adhere to OSHA, Utility, Federal, State, and Local safety requirements during placement of underground network.
  • Prepare job and drill for safe and efficient boring operations.
  • Fill water tanks and combine water with chemicals for boring according to ground conditions.
  • Verify the bore area to ensure all utilities have been located and develop a plan for navigating utilities or obstacles in the bore path.
  • Locate the drill head from point A to point B without hitting any utilities at the correct depth.
  • Pull back product using the correct equipment and mud mixture to ensure successful product transfer.
  • Provide accurate as-built information for entry into the GIS system.
  • Perform quality control and quality assurance on all completed work and equipment.
  • Participate in emergency repair of equipment.
  • Complete other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school degree or GED is required.
  • A valid Iowa Commercial Driver's License is required.
  • Experience using hand tools and construction equipment preferred.
  • 1 year of relevant experience preferred.
  • Ability to operate and maintain heavy equipment related to directional drilling and excavation.
  • Ability to accurately operate underground locating equipment and bore rig.
  • Ability to perform maintenance on drill equipment and mixing unit.
  • Strong oral, written, and organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work well unsupervised.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule, including days/nights and weekends, and travel as needed.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with vacuum excavators, mini excavators, skid loaders, trenchers, cable plows, bucket trucks, and aerial lifts.
