About the position

At Webster, we are committed to putting people first, and as a Managing Director-level Team Leader in our Asset Based Lending division, you will play a crucial role in achieving this mission. This position is designed for a senior ABL credit professional who thrives on client interaction and is passionate about leading a team of portfolio managers. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure an excellent, proactive client experience while maintaining the safety and soundness of the bank. You will be an integral member of the ABL management team, overseeing the credit risk management of the ABL Client Portfolio in accordance with Webster's policies and procedures. In this role, you will manage a portfolio management team, providing guidance, support, and mentorship to your team members. You will assist them in structuring credit solutions that align with the bank's credit appetite and profitability goals while addressing client requests. Your leadership will be essential in managing the workflow of the team, ensuring that client requests are handled proactively and that all credit work products are of high quality and delivered in a timely manner. You will also monitor and analyze portfolio performance, identifying trends and recommending actions as necessary. As a Team Leader, you will advocate for deals during client meetings and credit approval discussions, engaging in thoughtful discussions with business line and credit partners regarding deal structures, risks, and mitigants. Your effective coaching and mentoring will help build your team members' skills and knowledge, focusing on improving the quality and consistency of underwriting, portfolio management, and client coverage activities. You will also be responsible for attracting, selecting, developing, and retaining top talent while promoting a diverse and inclusive culture. Additionally, you will ensure that all credit work products, term sheets, and underwriting documents comply with bank policies and regulatory requirements. Building and maintaining strong client relationships will be a key aspect of your role, as will supporting a strong risk culture within Webster Bank.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a portfolio management team, providing guidance, support, and mentorship to team members.
  • Assist team members in providing proper credit structures to balance the credit appetite of the bank and profitability hurdles with client requests.
  • Manage the workflow of the team, ensuring proactive handling of client requests and quality and timeliness of all credit work products.
  • Monitor and analyze portfolio performance, identifying trends and recommending appropriate actions, escalating where necessary.
  • Provide effective advocacy for deals during client meetings and credit approval discussions, engaging in thoughtful discussions with business line and credit partners.
  • Demonstrate effective coaching and mentoring to build upon team members' skills and knowledge, focusing on improving the quality and consistency of underwriting and portfolio management activities.
  • Lead lender meetings on Webster agented transactions.
  • Attract, select, develop, and retain top talent while promoting a diverse and inclusive culture.
  • Ensure credit work products, term sheets, and underwriting documents meet all bank policy and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships.
  • Support a strong risk culture by conducting business in compliance with laws and regulations, internal policies, and guidelines.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive credit knowledge and ABL structuring skills.
  • Portfolio management expertise in Asset-Based Lending, including a strong understanding of collateral.
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • 10+ years of banking experience; management experience is a plus.
  • Bachelor's degree required, with a concentration in Finance or Accounting preferred; MBA preferred.
  • Formal Credit Training preferred.
