About the position

The Mechanic/Bus Operator position at Lincoln County Schools is designed to ensure the safety and proper operating condition of county buses and other vehicles. The role involves overseeing routine maintenance and ensuring compliance with state and national safety regulations. The position requires both mechanical skills for maintenance and repair of vehicles, as well as the ability to operate school buses and other transportation vehicles as mandated by the state board.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains garage in a safe workable order for efficient material flow.
  • Inspects, diagnoses and makes minor repairs to the mechanical and electrical systems on county buses and vehicles.
  • Repairs various components on school buses and county vehicles including water hoses, starters, brakes, radiators, wheelchair lifts, and lighting systems.
  • Performs preventive maintenance as required by WVDE Policy 4336.
  • Clears vehicles for use following repairs by test driving them.
  • Operates various hand tools and other equipment necessary for maintenance and repair.
  • Responds to road emergencies in the event of a breakdown.
  • Maintains computerized records of maintenance and safety inspections.
  • Provides back-up support to other positions in the Department.
  • Drives scheduled bus routes or trips when required.
  • Decides if a vehicle is safe to operate and whether repairs are needed.
  • Follows all safety rules and regulations and uses prescribed personal protective equipment.
  • Attends in-services and workshops as directed.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Continuously improves processes.
  • Maintains regular attendance.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of the WV State Competency Test for Mechanic.
  • Minimum of 2 years verifiable mechanical experience, preferably with diesel equipment.
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain a Class B CDL with a P and S endorsement within the first six months of employment.
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain West Virginia School Bus Operator Certification within the first six months of employment.
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain a valid Motor Vehicles Inspection License for the State of West Virginia within the first six months of employment.
  • Must be able to pass all health requirements established by Federal, State and County Governments.
  • Satisfactory background investigation, including by the CIB.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to follow a set routine and meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to independently diagnose problems and make appropriate repairs.
