About the position

The Mechanic Helper position within the Fleet Management Department of the City of Houston is designed to assist in the performance of preventative maintenance and repairs of City vehicles and equipment. This role is crucial for maintaining the operational efficiency of the fleet and contributes to the department's mission of providing best value fleet management services. The ideal candidate will be a quick learner, eager to make an immediate impact, and will work under various conditions to support the maintenance team.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in performing preventive maintenance activities to vehicles and equipment including oil and filter changes, servicing of lubricant and fluid levels, component wear inspection, and systems testing.
  • Assist with vehicle and equipment systems testing and diagnoses of operating issues.
  • Assist with the replacement of failed vehicle and equipment components.
  • Assist in performing vehicle body and paint repairs as well as component upfit and make ready.
  • Assist in monitoring inventory levels of equipment, supplies, and tools.
  • Perform delivery services as needed.
  • Service vehicles and equipment as needed.
  • Order parts and update/complete work orders according to standard operating procedures.
  • Use tools and equipment such as electronic and mechanical diagnostic equipment, tire changers, bench grinders, pressure washers, hoists, jacks, and a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment and perform housekeeping duties.

Requirements

  • Minimum education requirement of 9th grade achieved.
  • Ability to read and understand service, repair, and parts manuals, mechanical diagrams, safety, and hazardous materials communications.
  • Basic math and computer skills required.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Valid Texas Class C driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Current automotive technical students in High School, Community College, or Technical Automotive Programs are preferred.
