About the position

The Mechanic Helper at the Capital Area Transportation Authority plays a crucial role in supporting mechanics by performing a variety of maintenance and servicing tasks on equipment and its components. This position is essential for maintaining service quality and safety standards within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Assist mechanics in performing general maintenance and servicing on all equipment and its components.
  • Maintain service, quality, and safety standards.
  • Perform lube, oil, and filter service.
  • Conduct chassis inspection and adjustments.
  • Balance tires as needed.
  • Assist first and second-class mechanics in their tasks.
  • Rebuild non-mechanical component parts such as mirrors and radius rods.
  • Perform minor repairs on lights, sockets, bulbs, and lenses.
  • Re-bush torque (radius) rods.
  • Maintain and replace wiper arms and blades.
  • Install replacement batteries for vehicles.
  • Maintain and repair window latches (excluding emergency latches).
  • Maintain and replace sun visors, light panels, mud flaps, mirrors, and tires.
  • Handle red box installation and schedule rack installation for CATA flyer only.
  • Manage vinyl/decal replacement and small exterior repairs.
  • Maintain and repair seat cushions, A/C grills, and W/C restraints (belts only).
  • Jump-start buses as needed.
  • Replace transfer cutters in existing vehicles.
  • Perform brake shoe tear down (not on bus without mechanic).
  • Paint step wells.
  • Load test and charge batteries in the bench test area.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Associate degree in Diesel Service Technology is a plus.
  • Minimum three years of work experience preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience in heavy-duty diesel equipment maintenance and repair preferred.
  • Valid driver's license from the State of Michigan with a clean five-year driving record.
  • Temporary Instruction Permit for a Commercial Driver License or possess a CDL with airbrake and passenger endorsements.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's license with B with airbrake and passenger endorsements within 90 days of hire.
  • Forklift Driving Certificate or obtain within 90 days of employment.
  • Ability to pass a basic mechanic knowledge test administered by CATA.
  • ASE (T8 or H8) PM Certification is required.
  • Complete set of tools up through 1¼ size wrenches and sockets, including metric tools up to 20 mm.
  • Ability to lift and move parts and supplies, some more than fifty pounds.
  • Punctual and reliable attendance.
