About the position

The Mechanic I position at the City of Dallas involves assisting journey-level mechanics in performing preventive maintenance and repairs on motorized equipment, including gasoline and diesel engines. The role is crucial for ensuring the operational capacity of equipment at water treatment plants and pumping stations, particularly during routine and emergency conditions.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive and periodic maintenance, inspections, and repairs on automotive equipment and power tools.
• Repair and maintain hydraulic equipment using hand and special tools; manage inventory of parts from damaged vehicles.
• Assist in the inspection, dismantling, repair, adjustment, and installation of large water pumps, electric motors, and valves under supervision.
• Sharpen lawn mowing blades and perform minor maintenance on mowing equipment; conduct scheduled preventive maintenance checks.
• Complete job tickets, work orders, and maintain records of work performed and equipment conditions.
• Drive a wrecker to work sites for repairs or retrieval of city vehicles or equipment.
• Communicate with employees, divisions, and vendors to coordinate repairs and obtain materials.
• Maintain tools and equipment on assigned vehicle and gather necessary tools and parts for repairs.
• Perform other assigned work as needed, including being subject to 24/7 on-call duties.

Requirements

• High school diploma/GED or equivalent work experience.
• One year of experience in mechanical maintenance/repair of automotive, truck, or industrial equipment.
• Valid driver's license and good driving record.
