About the position

The Mechanic (MI-MIV) position is a full-time role within the Boiler House department, part of the Facilities Planning, Plant Operations and Maintenance division. This position is crucial for ensuring the efficient operation of HVAC systems across multiple campuses. The primary responsibility involves performing both basic and advanced maintenance and repairs on HVAC equipment, which includes monitoring and diagnosing issues through the HVAC automation system. The mechanic will also oversee fire automation systems to ensure their optimal performance, contributing to a safe and comfortable environment in all buildings. In this role, the mechanic will be tasked with a variety of essential duties. These include maintaining and repairing water and steam boilers, chillers, multi-stack units, and geothermal systems. The mechanic will also be responsible for diagnosing and repairing electrical, mechanical, and plumbing issues related to HVAC systems, air handlers, pumps, and furnaces. Regular maintenance tasks, such as filter and belt replacements, will also be part of the job. The position requires the ability to work on-call during weekends and holidays, responding to emergencies as needed. The mechanic will be expected to utilize their knowledge of HVAC systems and automation tools, such as Metasys, to monitor and maintain a comfortable environment in all buildings. As the role progresses through various grades (M-1 to M-4), additional responsibilities and requirements will be introduced, including advanced diagnostics and maintenance of commercial refrigeration systems and large power generation systems. The position demands a thorough understanding of building systems, safety standards, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Perform work on and maintain water and steam boilers, chillers, multi-stack units, geothermal systems, and fluid coolers.
  • Repair and rebuild motor pumps.
  • Diagnose and repair all electrical, mechanical, and plumbing problems with HVAC systems, air handlers, pumps, and furnaces.
  • Perform maintenance and miscellaneous duties as assigned.
  • Monitor and maintain campus water softener systems.
  • Diagnose issues through HVAC Automation such as Metasys.
  • Assist in working with water systems and split system server coolers.
  • Monitor fire automation systems and ensure their optimal performance.
  • Accomplish preventative maintenance work orders such as filter changes, belt replacements, and cleaning air handlers and furnace burners.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completed training in safety management.
  • Skill in the maintenance and repair of furnaces, air handlers, and related heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems and equipment.
  • Ability to operate, maintain, and repair boilers, chillers, and cooling towers.
  • Working knowledge of commercial generators and chemical monitoring of chiller and boiler water.
  • Knowledge of pumps, valves, motors, air handling equipment, and fire pumps.
  • Understanding of Metasys controls, digital and pneumatic systems.
  • Basic understanding of electricity, geothermal systems, and chilled beams.
  • Ability to perform sheet metal work.
  • Valid driver's license is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Licensed HVAC mechanic is desirable.
  • Operation of in-house electric generation systems is desirable.
