About the position

The Mechanic position in Public Works is responsible for repairing and maintaining fractional horsepower gasoline and diesel engines used in various equipment such as lawnmowers and tractors. The role involves diagnosing engine troubles, replacing parts, and ensuring the proper functioning of mechanical and hydraulic components. The position requires effective communication and collaboration with the public and co-workers, as well as adherence to safety protocols.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and locate causes of engine trouble.
• Replace or repair parts as needed.
• Clean and adjust carburetors.
• Start repaired engines and listen to sounds to test performance.
• Replace engines on machines.
• Visually inspect and listen to machines and equipment to locate causes of malfunctions.
• Dismantle machines and equipment to gain access to problem areas.
• Inspect parts to detect wear, misalignment, or other issues.
• Remove and replace worn or defective parts.
• Realign and adjust components such as spindles and clutches.
• Locate damaged hydraulic pipes on machines and install new pipes.
• Start machines and equipment to test operation following repairs.
• Repair broken parts.

Requirements

• One year certificate from college or technical school and five (5) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
• Ability to write simple correspondence.
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure.
• Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
• Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and a Commercial Drivers License (CDL).
