About the position

The Mechanical Application Engineer at U.S. Tsubaki plays a vital role within the Engineering Chain Division, focusing on providing essential technical support to ensure the correct selection and application of power transmission and motion control products. This position is integral to achieving reliable success for both the customer and the company. The engineer will engage proactively with various stakeholders, including inside and outside sales teams, product management, design engineering, manufacturing, and customers. This collaborative approach is crucial for delivering high-quality service and solutions that meet customer needs. In addition to offering technical product support, the Mechanical Application Engineer is responsible for product cost estimating. This aspect of the role requires a strong analytical mindset and meticulous attention to detail, as the accuracy of quotations directly influences the division's competitiveness and overall performance. The engineer will generate cost estimates using internal quotation programs and from-scratch calculations, ensuring that all engineering and technical requirements are effectively communicated to both internal and external customers. The role also involves conducting product analysis, including completing Returned Goods Analyses (RGAs) and corrective actions in a timely manner. The engineer will analyze worn or broken chains to determine failure modes and suggest improvements based on company design guidelines. This includes preparing and reviewing reports that cover findings from RGAs and proposing system changes for continuous improvement. The Mechanical Application Engineer will also investigate new technologies and conduct product testing for competitive analysis, establishing design specifications tailored to specific customer requirements. Occasional travel to customer locations may be necessary to troubleshoot systems and conveyor chain issues, further emphasizing the hands-on nature of this position.

Responsibilities

  • Generate cost estimates utilizing internal quotation programs and from-scratch calculations.
  • Effectively communicate engineering/technical requirements to internal and external customers.
  • Follow the corporate design manual in specifying chains, sprockets, and conveyor chain accessories to meet customer requirements.
  • Provide advice and technical support regarding product design to sales representatives, product management, quality, and manufacturing.
  • Cross-check estimates and proposals of other engineers.
  • Complete Returned Goods Analyses (RGAs) and Corrective Actions in a timely manner.
  • Analyze worn and/or broken chains for wear and determine modes and methods of failure.
  • Offer suggestions for chain and system changes and improvements based on company design guidelines.
  • Prepare and review reports covering findings of RGAs, including suggestions for improvements and system changes.
  • Investigate alternate designs and/or processes for continuous improvement (value analysis).
  • Analyze and evaluate new technologies to design new products or improve existing designs.
  • Conduct product testing for competitive analysis.
  • Establish design specifications for specific customer requirements.
  • Travel to customer locations to troubleshoot systems and conveyor chain issues as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (BS) in Mechanical Engineering (or Technology) with 2 years of related experience, or an Associate's Degree with 6-10 years of related experience.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with a problem-solving mindset.
  • Ability to apply principles of logic, engineering, and/or scientific thinking to a wide range of problems.
  • Excellent mathematical and reasoning skills, including advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, algebraic equations, and statistical concepts.
  • Strong ability to perform cost analysis, mechanical system analysis, variance reports, and test sampling.
  • Accurate measurement skills and the ability to read and understand technical drawings.
  • Proficiency in computer software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, QAD, and file management.
