About the position

Hitachi Energy is seeking a Mechanical CAD/Creo Designer/Drafter for its South Boston, Virginia location. This role is responsible for drafting with low to medium complexity, completing assignments on small design projects or portions of larger designs. The work must be cost-effective and adhere to tender/order specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements. The designer will be overall responsible for CAD/Creo mechanical designs of Power Transformers, which includes 3D modeling of parts and assemblies, 2D drafting for drawings, layouts, and sections, as well as supporting control wiring designs, detailed designs, bill of materials, shipping drawings, and as-built drawings. The Mechanical CAD/Creo Designer will prepare mechanical designs and develop power transformers, ensuring compliance with industry standards, client specifications, and project requirements to support production. A prime focus will be on delivering CAD/Creo activities, including 3D modeling in parts and assemblies at different levels, and 2D drafting for drawings and BOMs, all while meeting engineering quality standards. Familiarity with design principles, guidelines, and applicable standards used within the manufacturing design of Power Transformers is essential. The designer will also support peer reviews and design reviews with internal stakeholders, including customers and suppliers, and will evaluate, select, and apply standard techniques and procedures to perform transformer layout design, coordinating with electrical engineers to generate the necessary drawings for manufacturing. Safety standards and risk mitigation are paramount in this role, aligning with Hitachi Energy's core values of safety and integrity. Responsibilities

  • Complete assignments on small design or portions of larger design, cost-effectively and in accordance with tender/order specifications, quality standards and safety requirements.
  • Prepare the mechanical design and development of power transformers, ensuring compliance with industry standards, client specifications, and project requirements.
  • Deliver CAD/Creo activities, including 3D modeling in parts and assemblies and 2D drafting for drawings and BOMs, on time and meeting engineering quality standards.
  • Support peer review and design review with internal stakeholders including customers and suppliers.
  • Evaluate, select and apply standard techniques and procedures to perform transformer layout design, coordinating with electrical engineers to generate the drawings for manufacturing.
  • Ensure adherence to safety standards and mitigation of potential risks.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in Mechanical or Computer Drafting and Design with Drafting/3D modeling or related certification.
  • Minimum of 2 years modeling and drafting experience (Internship & Co-ops experience are also considered).
  • Hands-on knowledge in designing with CAD/Creo and 3D modeling tools and performing 2D drawings/layouts.
  • Experience with manufacturing and production processes and standardization and modularization of structures is highly desirable.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative solutions-oriented approach.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in design engineering of any power product is highly preferred.
