About the position

KBR is seeking a Mechanical-Chemical Biofuels Engineer to join our team in Newark, Delaware. This position is a unique opportunity to be part of a team that is leading the deployment of new technologies in sustainability initiatives for our key clients. The ideal candidate will be a licensed Professional Engineer with a proven track record of managing multiple mechanical design efforts from conceptual design through construction support, specifically for world-class chemical and biofuel clients. The role requires in-depth knowledge of mechanical equipment typically found in the chemical and biofuels industries, as well as familiarity with industry codes to provide effective leadership on challenging projects. In this role, the selected candidate will function in multiple technical capacities, depending on their background and skills. Responsibilities will include early project planning and coordination, managing the preparation and review of mechanical specification packages, and overseeing the entire procurement life cycle while collaborating closely with various disciplines. The candidate will also be responsible for developing complex multi-discipline construction packages, maintaining positive relationships with clients, vendors, and contractors, and tracking project scope and schedule to ensure alignment with original designs and budgets. Additionally, the candidate will serve as a technical specialist, actively engaging with key clients to extend collaborative relationships in their area of expertise. They will act as a subject matter expert for the local office and participate in KBR's worldwide network of SMEs. Training and mentoring early-to-mid career engineers will also be a key aspect of this role, along with providing consultation services to in-house projects and external clients as needed. This position is expected to function in a hybrid work environment, with the flexibility to travel to client sites for meetings and design reviews, and fully remote work will be considered for the right candidate.

Responsibilities

  • Early project planning and coordination while handling two to three small to mid-cap sized projects with ability to quickly provide engineering work hour estimates and risk memos.
  • Develop and manage the preparation, review and checking of mechanical specification packages in accordance with Client requirements and industry best practices.
  • Manage and successfully influence the entire procurement life cycle while working closely with all disciplines.
  • Managing development of complex multi-discipline Construction packages including diagrams, drawings, equipment schedules, details, and Scopes of Work.
  • Maintain positive relationships with clients, vendors, and contractors in a professional manner.
  • Track Project Scope and Schedule and notify project manager of deviation from original design, budget, or schedule.
  • Actively engage key clients while extending our already successful collaborative relationships in the candidate's area of specialty.
  • Act as subject matter expert for KBR local office and participate in KBR's worldwide network of SME's.
  • Train and mentor early-to-mid career engineers in the candidate's area of expertise.
  • Provide consultation services to in-house projects on as-needed basis and provide external consulting services when requested.

Requirements

  • Preferred Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering or another related field.
  • 10+ years (minimum) of experience in the EPC industry or chemical / biofuels operating companies. Will consider experience with chemical site team or project engineering backgrounds in related industries. Operations / Maintenance and Reliability experience is a plus.
  • Professional Engineering License (P.E.) is mandatory.
  • Proven experience with any of the following core areas: Broad experience with any chemical's technologies and / or biofuels experience.
  • Heat transfer technology and equipment such as boilers, heat exchangers, char boilers, gasification, mechanical vapor recompression systems etc.
  • Large complex packaged equipment systems such as thermal oxidizers, cooling towers, process units etc.
  • Working knowledge of other engineering disciplines while providing proactive leadership on all interdiscipline design coordination efforts.
  • Ability to travel as needed to survey client sites.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with supervisory experience.
