About the position

The Mechanical Design Engineer for the Optimus Battery team at Tesla is responsible for innovating and developing battery solutions for humanoid robots. This role involves full product design responsibility, from concept through production, and requires a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles to address various engineering challenges related to battery design and integration into autonomous robots.

Responsibilities

• Full product design responsibility, from concept through production launch and ramp
• 3D design of complex parts and assemblies
• Advancing product performance while driving down cost and mass
• Developing new technologies, supported with early process development
• Hands-on prototyping
• Specification definition (dimensional, functional, performance, manufacturing)
• Meticulous release of 2D part and assembly drawings
• Owning basic testing and analysis; supporting advanced testing and analysis
• Root causing test failures and production problems
• Travel to support production launch and ramp (supplier visits, on-site at Tesla GFNV, etc.)

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience
• Preferably 2-5 years in battery or high-volume manufacturing environments
• Strong Engineering fundamentals in heat transfer, electrical, mechanics, and basic electronics
• Proficiency in CAD modeling. CATIA V5/V6 and 3DX experience is a plus
• Proficiency with statistics and data analysis. SPC/Black-Belt proficiency a plus but not mandatory
• Preferred experience with various manufacturing processes such as plastic injection molding, metal stamping, thermoforming, welding/brazing, plating, PCBA/FPC, and bonding
• Preferred experience in designing for high volume assembly, both manual and automated
• A detail-oriented personality with solid documentation and reporting skills
• Experience with student Formula Vehicle, Solar Car, Formula Baja, etc. is a plus
