About the position

The Mechanical Design Engineer for Solar Hardware at Tesla is a pivotal role focused on innovating and developing design concepts into practical product offerings. This position requires a candidate with a strong background in mechanical engineering, showcasing a history of innovation and technical expertise. The engineer will be part of Tesla's Solar Roof Design Engineering Team, which is dedicated to creating advanced roofing and solar systems aimed at accelerating the transition to sustainable energy. The team emphasizes design conception, prototyping, and Design for Manufacturing (DFM) processes for Tesla's Solar Roof products. The role involves evaluating new concepts based on first principles, conducting rigorous cost analyses, and performing reliability testing to ensure the feasibility and reliability of designs. In this role, the Mechanical Design Engineer will participate in cross-functional development of product requirements, designing mechanical solutions for integrating photovoltaic systems into roofs. The engineer will engage in agile concept development and CAD creation, applying first principles analysis through solid mechanics and strength of materials calculations. Additionally, the engineer will be responsible for qualifying new technology platforms for design applications and managing rapid prototyping projects, both internally and with external contract manufacturers. The position also involves collaborating with the DFMEA test plan development and validation teams, working closely with Manufacturing Engineering to ensure effective DFM, and supporting pilot testing and product launches. Furthermore, the engineer will collaborate with the legal team to secure patents for innovative ideas, contributing to Tesla's commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in cross-functional development of product requirements
  • Design mechanical solutions for novel roof integrated photovoltaic systems
  • Agile concept development and CAD creation of concepts
  • Conduct first principles analysis using solid mechanics and strength of materials calculations
  • Qualify new technology platforms as mediums for design
  • Manage hands-on rapid prototyping and/or project management of internal/external rapid prototyping contract manufacturing projects
  • Participate in DFMEA test plan development and validation with Field Applications and Reliability Engineering teams
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering or external contract manufacturers on product DFM
  • Support employee and customer pilot testing and product launches
  • Collaborate with the legal team to secure patents for new ideas

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 2 years of product design experience or an advanced degree in a related field
  • Experience with high volume product design and manufacturing processes
  • Proficient in Solidworks or similar CAD software, 3-D modeling, and 3-D prototyping
  • Strong experience in GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proven success in high-pressure, tight deadline situations
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills
