About the position

Siemens Smart Infrastructure is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer Spring Intern to join our Electrification and Automation division in Wendell, NC. This internship is designed for undergraduate or graduate students currently enrolled in Mechanical Engineering programs. The internship will provide an opportunity to support a variety of engineering tasks related to our portfolio of protection and automation products and solutions. Interns will engage in project design tasks, operations, product development, and process improvements, contributing to the overall success of our team. The position is part-time and temporary, with a flexible start date between January 6th and April 18th, allowing for some adaptability based on academic schedules. As an intern, you will be involved in modeling designs using 3D NX CAD and 2D AutoCAD Electrical, supporting engineering work through various projects. You will participate in team improvement initiatives focused on process documentation and work instructions, and you will be responsible for creating documentation for legacy products and projects. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to design new parts for prototypes under the guidance of senior team members, as well as update existing parts to enhance their designs. Your role will also include supporting prototype builds, organizing electrical and mechanical device libraries, and providing production and lab support on product assembly. This internship is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in mechanical design and engineering processes while working alongside experienced professionals in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support engineering work via modeling of designs (3D NX CAD and 2D AutoCAD Electrical)
  • Participate in team improvement projects focused on process documentation and work instructions
  • Create documentation of legacy products and projects
  • Design new parts for prototypes with support of senior members and update existing parts to improve designs
  • Support prototype builds with support of senior members and JT files
  • Create/organize electrical and mechanical device libraries
  • Provide production and lab support on product assembly

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student studying Mechanical Engineering
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical design and basic electrical concepts
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with MS Office products, including proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Nice-to-haves

  • 3D modeling/drafting experience (Solidworks, AutoCAD, NX)
  • Ability to prioritize work and meet project deadlines
