About the position

Tesla Motors is seeking an exceptional Mechanical Engineer who is motivated to change the automotive world. This Engineer will join the team responsible for the design of the SuperManifold/OctoValve assembly, the heart of the Tesla heat pump system. This Engineer will be responsible for conceiving and designing cutting edge, heating and cooling components and systems with optimum efficiency, performance, reliability and safety. This role is within the Vehicle Engineering team and will work closely with the Quality, Service, Manufacturing, Validation, and Purchasing organizations as well as external suppliers to design outstanding vehicles. The Mechanical Design Engineer will focus on the mechanical design and packaging of thermal system components to meet system and vehicle requirements while optimizing for efficiency, cost, weight, manufacturability and serviceability. The role involves managing suppliers and projects to ensure timely program deliverables within budget. The Engineer will develop component and system level requirements based on vehicle level requirements and customer experience, leading the creation of component specifications, component DFMEA, and other technical design documents. Additionally, the Engineer will develop and execute component and subsystem design verification plans and test methods to validate product adherence to requirements, ensuring that vehicles conform to all motor vehicle safety standards governing thermal system operation. The position supports vehicle programs through the entire life cycle including spec development, prototype builds, vehicle testing, and production.

Responsibilities

  • Mechanical design and packaging of thermal system components to meet system and vehicle requirements while optimizing for efficiency, cost, weight, manufacturability and serviceability
  • Manage suppliers and projects to ensure timely program deliverables within budget
  • Develop component and system level requirements based on vehicle level requirements and customer experience
  • Lead creation of component specifications, component DFMEA, and other technical design documents
  • Develop and execute component and subsystem design verification plans and test methods to validate product adherence to requirements
  • Ensure vehicles conform to all motor vehicle safety standards governing thermal system operation
  • Support vehicle programs through the entire life cycle including: spec development, prototype builds, vehicle test, and production

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 1+ years of full-time or internship experience preferred with an exceptional track record of designing and building
  • Demonstrable motivation and ability to solve novel, difficult design problems with tight timing constraints
  • Outstanding design, packaging and 3D modeling skills - CATIA preferred
  • Passion for electric vehicles and energy efficiency
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment
  • Working knowledge of mechanics and structure design, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics
  • Working knowledge of automotive thermal systems preferred including compressors, valves, actuators, heat exchangers, fluid transfer components, and vehicle performance testing
  • Working knowledge of high-volume manufacturing processes preferred including injection molding, stamping, casting, forging, and brazing
