About the position

The Mechanical Design Engineer position at OFS involves designing and developing new production equipment for the manufacture of glass optical fiber and cable. This role is crucial for supporting the company's growth and requires collaboration with various engineering and production teams to ensure effective equipment maintenance and troubleshooting. The engineer will also be responsible for creating detailed drawings, BOMs, and user manuals, contributing to the overall efficiency and innovation in optical solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop machine equipment for the manufacture of glass optical fiber and cable based on internal customer specifications.
  • Collaborate with electrical controls engineering, maintenance, and production teams to support equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Support equipment and process modification and upgrading.
  • Develop and maintain detail drawings, BOMs, and manuals.
  • Create machine user manuals, set-up, and maintenance procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or technology.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles, including stress, deflection, and motor size requirement calculations.
  • Working knowledge of machine components such as bearings, couplings, gears, actuators, motors, chains, spindles, springs, ball screws, pneumatics, welding/sheet metal fabrication, and machining processes.
  • Experience with inspection, metrology, and material specification.
  • Mechanical detailing/checking and specifying tolerances.
  • Proficiency in 3D Solid Modeling, preferably SolidWorks.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical design issues.
  • Project management skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to develop constructive working relationships with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Self-driven for excellence and strong sense to recognize achievable equipment optimization and improvement.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
