About the position

We are looking for exceptional engineers with a high interest in design and the passion, creativity, and skills to support a broad range of R&D in a multi-disciplinary environment. Mechanical Design Engineers provide the creative design talents and practical know-how needed to bring mechanical prototypes and high-performance products to life. Projects begin with concept development and proceed through analysis, mechanical design, fabrication, and testing leading to the development of prototypes, commercial products, and deployed systems. As a Mechanical Design Engineer, the focus will be on electro-mechanical and thermal-fluid systems. In this role, you will work on a variety of projects, managing several "clean-sheet" R&D projects at a time. Examples of current and past projects include spacecraft cryogenic systems, compact combustors, vacuum pumps for Mars rovers, compact heat exchangers, aerosol devices for administering pharmaceuticals, liquid nitrogen cooling systems for cutting tools, precision scroll pumps, and turbines with shaft speeds greater than 500,000 rpm. This position offers challenging and interesting work, where you will utilize your knowledge of statics, dynamics, fluid flow, heat transfer, materials, and mechanical design to develop fabrication processes and design, build, and test experimental hardware, working prototypes, and specialized products. You will collaborate with talented and creative colleagues, teaming with other engineers and highly capable support staff, including designers, drafters, mechanical technicians, and precision machinists. Project teams are small and highly interdisciplinary, fostering an environment of innovation and creativity. Located in a New England college town, this position offers exceptional opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts, access to excellent schools and medical centers, and proximity to Dartmouth College. Additionally, New Hampshire has no state sales or income tax, making it an attractive place to live and work.

Responsibilities

  • Support a broad range of R&D in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Provide creative design talents and practical know-how for mechanical prototypes and high-performance products.
  • Manage several clean-sheet R&D projects simultaneously.
  • Utilize knowledge of statics, dynamics, fluid flow, heat transfer, materials, and mechanical design to develop fabrication processes.
  • Design, build, and test experimental hardware, working prototypes, and specialized products.
  • Collaborate with other engineers and support staff in small, interdisciplinary project teams.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of mechanical engineering design experience in industry.
  • Excellent academic credentials (BSME or MSME).
  • Ability to design for a wide range of fabrication processes.
  • Capabilities in FEM and CAD.
  • Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge and background in materials, metallurgy, and structural engineering with strong analysis skills are preferred.
  • U.S. Citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents only.

Nice-to-haves

  • P.E. licensure is a plus but not required.
