About the position

The Mechanical Designer/Drafter position at Los Alamos National Laboratory involves supporting the engineering team in the design and drafting of research and development (R&D) structures and hardware. The role requires collaboration with test and design engineers to create detailed drawing sets for various projects, ensuring adherence to engineering standards and practices. The position is available at two levels, with responsibilities increasing for the higher level, including advanced technical standards and cross-functional knowledge application.

Responsibilities

  • Support the engineering team's design of R&D structures and hardware.
  • Work closely with test and design engineers to provide detailed drawing sets for test configurations and fabrication of hardware.
  • Create complete drawing packages that require minimal checking.
  • Develop complex, large assemblies using parametric models and proper mating conditions.
  • Participate in design reviews and resolve design conflicts.
  • Provide interface for complex design issues.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years experience with computer-aided drafting (CAD) modeling and engineering drawing preparation using software such as Creo and Solidworks.
  • Demonstrated experience in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T) per ANSI Y14.5 engineering drawing standard.
  • Experience in precision mechanical design of structures, systems, and components, considering design for manufacturability.
  • Ability to layout systems in schematic and plan view.
  • For Designer/Drafter 4: Minimum 5 years experience in CAD and product data management software.
  • Advanced knowledge of resolving manufacturing issues with fabricators and understanding of consensus code applications.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working within the framework of established conduct of engineering practices.
  • Understanding of design for manufacturing principles and methods for mechanical hardware.
