About the position

Alcon is seeking a Mechanical Engineer / Mechanical Designer to join their Surgical R&D team in Lake Forest, CA. This role involves the development of components within a sub-system as dictated by R&D, as well as leading technical support staff to complete projects requested by the Simulation and Manufacturing teams. The position requires a strong background in mechanical design and engineering, particularly in the medical device sector.

Responsibilities

  • Assure project progress, resolve technical issues, and escalate when needed.
  • Design, develop, and document plastic, die cast, sheet metal, and machine components and assemblies utilizing Creo Parametric 3D CAD software.
  • Create and manage products or sub-system's top-down skeleton level architecture to ensure module interfaces and master model alignment with Alcon development process.
  • Generate detailed fabrication drawings utilizing GD&T and mechanical tolerance analysis.
  • Recommend fabrication and additive manufacturing processes to meet R&D needs, specifically for plastic, die casting, sheet metal, and machine component design.
  • Develop a network of external suppliers and internal resources within the department and across functions.
  • Perform fitment and DFM/A checks.
  • Ensure the integrity and quality of the Group's output by establishing, maintaining, and enforcing Alcon standards, processes & procedures.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in group procedures and lead initiatives aimed at continual improvement in efficiency & effectiveness of the group.
  • Ensure engineering and company procedures are followed.
  • Mentor, develop, and train engineers and group personnel in the proper use of Creo Parametric CAD software and top-down design and master model methodologies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree + 10-years minimum work experience.
  • Proficient using 3D CAD software Creo Parametric modules: ISDX, Simulate, Pro-Process, Sheet Metal, Large tabulation / Family table set up, Mechanism, Pro-Process, including employing top-down design and master model methodology. SolidWorks is a plus.
  • Proficient in Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of materials and specifications for plastic, die casting, sheet metal, and machine parts.

Nice-to-haves

  • The ability to fluently read, write, understand, and communicate in English.
  • Motivated self-starter with proven ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Experience working and collaborating with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced R&D environment, preferably in the medical device space.
  • Familiarity with DRM and ANSI Y14.5 drawing standards for completing drawings for machine, plastic, sheet metal, and die cast components, top-level assemblies, and module assemblies. Drawings for Cables and PCBA's is a plus.
