About the position

Spectrum Associates, Inc. is expanding its Engineering team to meet the growing demands in both domestic and international aerospace markets. The Mechanical Designer will play a crucial role in the design, development, and qualification of various aerospace components, including pressure switches, fuel system valves, and hydraulic components for military and commercial aircraft. This position requires a strong foundation in electro-mechanical systems and the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment. The Mechanical Designer will utilize 2D AutoCAD and 3D Inventor design software to create new designs and support existing configurations, ensuring that all products meet stringent quality and performance standards. In this role, the Mechanical Designer will be responsible for creating detailed part drawings and assembly drawings for internal tooling, test equipment, and flight products. The candidate will also support laboratory activities, including field failure analysis and qualification testing, by writing test plans and reports, as well as manufacturing process documents. The position involves troubleshooting production issues, supporting manufacturing engineering tasks, and engaging in activities related to quality improvement, such as Root Cause Analysis and Process Failure Mode Effects Analysis. The ideal candidate will possess a positive attitude, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate effectively within a small team. A technical degree or equivalent experience of at least five years in product design and development is required, along with proficiency in drafting practices and knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). Training opportunities are available to enhance skills and knowledge in this dynamic field.

Responsibilities

  • Use 2D AutoCAD and 3D Inventor design software to develop new designs and support legacy configurations.
  • Create 2D detail part drawings and assembly drawings for internal tooling and test equipment and for-flight products.
  • Support laboratory activity involving field failure analysis and qualification activities.
  • Write qualification test plans and test reports.
  • Write manufacturing process documents and develop bench assembly and test tooling.
  • Perform manufacturing engineering tasks and troubleshooting.
  • Support Quality Clinic activity to improve efficiency and reduce scrap/waste.
  • Support Relentless Root Cause Analysis (RRCA), Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA), and Process Failure Mode Effects Analysis (PFMEA).
  • Create design packages and troubleshoot production issues.
  • Work with lab personnel to develop new products and support 3D printing.

Requirements

  • Technical degree or equivalent minimum of 5 years work experience in product design and development.
  • Proficient with drafting practices and knowledge of GD&T.
  • Strong electro-mechanical skills.
  • Ability to work in a small effective team environment.
  • Effective communication skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • Basic machining experience is a plus.

Nice-to-haves
