About the position

The Mechanical Engineer 1 position at Rapiscan Systems involves designing and analyzing mechanical systems and equipment, with a focus on advanced x-ray technologies for security applications. The role requires collaboration with cross-functional teams and adherence to quality procedures while supporting the development of innovative solutions to enhance product lines.

Responsibilities

  • Execute mechanical designs in disciplines such as sheet metal, structural welded assemblies, plastic injection molding, vacuum forming, 3D printing, and machining.
  • Provide design concepts with analytical justification and perform detailed mechanical design in support of larger system design efforts.
  • Apply theoretical calculations to design in areas such as structural analysis, thermodynamics, and fluid flow, or validate designs through testing mathematical models.
  • Provide guidance to junior members of engineering and drafting/CAD staff.
  • Support the development of estimates for engineering hours with senior staff and management.
  • Adhere rigorously to company and quality procedures and requirements.
  • Develop documentation necessary for preliminary and critical design reviews and support designs through the release to manufacturing.
  • Create designs and documentation for production documentation packages.
  • Collaborate with peers in cross-functional areas such as electrical engineering, manufacturing engineering, quality assurance, and supply chain management.
  • Identify and initiate process improvements.
  • Actively appraise technology and product concepts to keep product lines competitive by attending seminars and reading related articles.
  • Provide project technical status to lead engineers, functional and program management.
  • Possess proficiency in computer design tools, specifically SolidWorks 3D solid modeling CAD.

Requirements

  • Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering; equivalent experience may be accepted.
  • 0 - 2 years' relevant mechanical design/test experience (intern or co-op) required.
  • Experience working in a cross-functional environment.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks 3D solid modeling CAD tools.
  • Experience with FEA simulations and the ability to validate results using engineering calculations.
  • Solid working knowledge of machine shop and drafting practices.
  • Full working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing practices.
  • Experience working with Design-for-Manufacturing and Design-for-Cost.
  • Strong communication skills, including excellent writing and presentation skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in SolidWorks and mechanical stress and thermal modeling.
  • Experience with automated and electromechanical designs.
  • Experience working in a Model-only (MBD) environment.
  • Experience working with professional problem solving techniques.
