About the position

Kenworth Division of PACCAR is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for the Aftersales Engineering team in Kirkland, Washington. This role is pivotal in enhancing customer satisfaction and resolving product field issues that impact customer uptime and warranty costs. The Aftersales Engineering group's mission is to identify and address product field issues, focusing on solutions that improve reliability and reduce warranty expenditures. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will engage in the design and development of heavy-duty trucks, ensuring that your contributions lead to tangible improvements on the open highway. In this position, you will analyze and troubleshoot field failures to determine root causes within vehicle systems. Your responsibilities will include the design and development of components such as hoods, fittings, chassis, suspension, and engine systems. You will also provide essential documentation to various design teams and contribute to the development of procedures that ensure quality and reliability in our systems. Analyzing warranty data will be a key part of your role, as you will use this information to support issue identification and root cause analysis. The role requires you to integrate components and features into Kenworth/PACCAR vehicles while managing engineering processes to maintain project schedules and budgets. You will track progress towards warranty reduction goals and plan validation testing for components. Additionally, you will support solution launches at vehicle assembly plants, ensuring that the highest quality standards are met. Your creativity will be essential in proposing innovative approaches to design tasks, and you will collaborate with cross-functional teams throughout the product creation process, utilizing Six Sigma methodologies to manage projects effectively. Responsibilities

  • Participate in the design of heavy-duty trucks within the Aftersales Engineering group, focusing on improving field reliability and quality.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot field failures to find the root cause of symptoms in vehicle systems.
  • Perform the design and development of assigned elements for hoods, fittings, chassis, suspension, engine, and after-treatment systems.
  • Provide interface documentation to wiring design, system architects, and mechanical design groups.
  • Contribute to the development of procedures and practices that ensure quality and reliable systems.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis of warranty data to support issue identification and root cause analysis.
  • Utilize data to identify priorities and drive to meet and exceed department and division goals.
  • Integrate components, features, and requirements into Kenworth/PACCAR vehicles.
  • Manage engineering and project management processes to maintain schedule, budget, and functionality.
  • Track and report on progress toward warranty and downtime reduction goals.
  • Plan and track validation testing of components.
  • Support solution launches at vehicle assembly plants.
  • Ensure industry-leading quality and reliability is met, maintained, and exceeded on all components.
  • Apply creativity to design tasks and propose innovative approaches to standard work.
  • Work with cross-functional teams on warranty reduction project initiation, design, validation, product release, and field support.
  • Utilize the Product Creation Process and Six Sigma methodologies to manage projects and report updates.
  • Manage multiple priorities and goals simultaneously.
  • Utilize Creo Parametric to create optimized parts and complex assemblies.

Requirements

  • BSME or equivalent engineering degree required.
  • Master's degree in engineering and P.E. certificate are a plus.
  • 3-5 years of experience in the specification and design of complex automotive or commercial vehicle systems or industry-related background.
  • Proficiency using Requirements Management tools, Systems Engineering tools, Pro/E or other 3D CAD software.
  • Competence in the use of personal computer software such as word processing, databases, and spreadsheets.
  • Engineering knowledge of heavy-duty commercial truck safety systems and regulations.
  • Experience creating engineering documentation including preparation of component drawings and diagrams.
  • Experience responding to Requests for Engineering Information, writing Engineering Change Notices, and test coordination.
  • Knowledge or understanding of SQL/databases.
  • Solid understanding of Design for Six Sigma and Six Sigma techniques.
  • Willingness to learn and use new engineering processes and techniques.
  • Experience in product development and new product implementation.
  • Able to work in a team environment.
  • Experience with project management tools, word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with electric and autonomous trucks.
  • Familiarity with advanced diesel engines and their applications.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations related to commercial vehicles.
