As a Mechanical Engineer or Chemical Engineer, you will provide forensic consulting services that require your expertise in mechanical or chemical engineering for various clients, including insurance, legal, and industrial sectors. Your role will involve evaluating industrial equipment assessments, failures, injuries, and related property damage claims, and you will be responsible for providing both oral and written reports of your findings, including expert testimony when necessary. In this position, you will perform forensic assignments based on a scope of work and budget agreed upon with the client. You will investigate incidents to determine their causes, whether they stem from equipment failure or other root causes. Your responsibilities will include inspecting sites, performing analyses of equipment, documenting conditions, determining the cause and origin of damage, conducting site surveys, performing engineering calculations, and preparing CAD-based and manual sketches. You will also be responsible for initiating, developing, and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with clients, ensuring their needs are met while delivering high-quality consulting services.

Responsibilities

  • Perform forensic assignments within the field of mechanical/chemical engineering expertise based on a scope of work and budget prepared by the consultant and agreed upon by the client.
  • Investigate how and why an incident occurred and determine whether it resulted from equipment failure or other root causes.
  • Inspect sites/products/equipment; perform analysis of equipment; document site/product conditions, determine cause and origin of damage; perform site surveys with total station survey equipment; perform engineering calculations; prepare CAD-based and manual sketches as required; order and evaluate required laboratory testing and perform analyses.
  • Initiate, develop, and maintain mutually beneficial client relationships.

Requirements

  • B.S. Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering degree or higher.
  • P.E. required and the ability to obtain additional professional registrations in other states.
  • 7+ years of industrial experience with refining, chemical, power, or metals.
  • Field experience in an industrial environment is required.
  • Project management experience preferred.
  • High level of analytical skills with continual attention to detail.
  • Background in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, pressure vessels, rotating equipment, material selection, equipment sizing, FEL/FEED, and engineering economics.
  • Experience in state and federal technical regulations, including ASME, API, ANSI, NFPA, and OSHA codes and standards.
  • Experience in plant-safe work practices.
  • Ability to interact and communicate with clients at all levels (e.g., internal and external).
  • Knowledge of a variety of computer software applications, including Microsoft Office Applications and computer-assisted engineering and design software.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret drawings, common scientific and technical reports or journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to write scopes of work clearly and coherently, budget estimates, schedules, reports of findings, proposals, general correspondence, and other technical documents.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries from internal and external clients.
  • Ability to manage, schedule, and execute multiple ongoing projects.
  • Ability to collaborate with other engineering and scientific disciplines on complex matters.
  • Capable of effectively presenting information to top management, clients, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with advanced laboratory testing techniques.
