About the position

The Mechanical Design Engineer position at Lilly focuses on the design, development, and commercialization of mechanical and electromechanical delivery systems. This role is integral to the emerging platform mechanical engineering team, ensuring that new products meet quality system requirements while accelerating time to market. The engineer will leverage their expertise to assess design concepts, coordinate risk assessments, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver patient-centered designs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Mechanical/Electromechanical design engineering technical expertise and ensure that device design concepts are based on sound design engineering principles utilizing the latest engineering tools/technologies.
  • Evaluate or create finite element analysis, tolerance stacks, manufacturing processes and scale-up, moldflow analysis, DOE, etc.
  • Assess and evaluate design concepts for technical risk and DFx (manufacturability, reliability, assembly, ultrasonic welding parameters, gluing and snap fits).
  • Interact with internal and external design partners.
  • Work collaboratively with cross functional teams to accelerate time to market of patient centered designs.
  • Coordinate device risk assessments and design control deliverables, ensuring thorough design risk assessments are conducted and acted upon.
  • Ensure appropriate formal approval of required risk assessment documentation is accomplished.
  • Ensure all required applicable design control deliverables are completed.
  • Author technical reports, work instructions, change control documentation and development plans.

Requirements

  • BS degree in engineering (mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related field)
  • 3+ years of experience working in industry demonstrating successful application of mechanical engineering fundamentals.

Nice-to-haves

  • 3+ years of experience developing drug delivery systems (e.g. cartridges, prefilled syringes, combination product delivery devices, and medical devices).
  • Mechanical engineering knowledge with applications to biomedical and drug delivery device areas.
  • Fundamental knowledge of cGMP/laboratory compliance requirements.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills, including technical report writing.
  • Problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Effective application of statistics and design of experiments.
