About the position

As a Geartrain Design and Analysis Engineer at Tesla, you will be responsible for designing and analyzing geartrain components and systems to improve their durability, efficiency, noise performance, cost-effectiveness, and power density. This role requires a strong understanding of geartrain physics and the ability to apply this knowledge to solve complex technical challenges in high-performance drive units for Tesla's powertrains.

Responsibilities

  • Design and analyze geartrain components such as rotating shafts, gears, differentials, torque-splitting devices, and clutches.
  • Develop component and system level models to predict geartrain durability, efficiency, noise, mass, and cost.
  • Conduct analysis to inform design trade-offs and inform geartrain design decisions.
  • Create, develop, and execute component or system level tests to validate geartrain design and calibrate geartrain models.
  • Leverage geartrain models and analyses to troubleshoot unexpected durability, efficiency or noise issues identified in drive unit validation tests.
  • Incorporate fleet data into models to evaluate drive units' fleet performance attributes for further design improvements.
  • Implement models parametrically in Tesla's proprietary powertrain cloud simulation tool to inform powertrain architecture decisions for future programs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams across vehicle modeling, design, manufacturing, and supply chain to deliver and launch optimized drive system designs using data-driven analysis.

Requirements

  • First-principles physics understanding of engineering disciplines associated with geartrain durability, efficiency, noise, and vibration.
  • Experience with geartrain design and analysis tools like LDP, KissSoft, Romax, Transmission 3D or equivalent.
  • Experience with Matlab, Python, or equivalent programming language.
  • Familiar with CAE analysis software package like Ansys, Abaqus or Hyperwork.
  • Experience in 3D modeling within a product development environment, CATIA preferred.
  • Experience in rotating machinery design, analysis, tests, and failure analysis.
  • Knowledge of gears, bearings, differentials, actuators, clutches, axle disconnect systems or multi-speed transmissions.
  • Understanding of ANSI Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing and its application to part drawings and function.

Benefits

  • Aetna PPO and HSA plans with $0 payroll deduction options
  • Family-building, fertility, adoption and surrogacy benefits
