About the position

Syncom Space Services, Inc. (S3) is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our Engineering Services Department team at NASA John C. Stennis Space Center. The ideal candidate will assist in the design and analysis of new or modifications to existing sitewide infrastructure, to include sitewide utilities distribution systems, technical systems, facilities, or special test equipment (STE).

Responsibilities

  • Development of mechanical designs for construction of new or modification to existing facilities
  • Sitewide utility, process piping, and HVAC design
  • Prepares plans, models, and drawings using design software
  • Performs mechanical design calculations and analyses using software and engineering methods
  • Develop heat load analysis models, flow models, and pressure calculations for the design of mechanical systems
  • Fluid and gas subsystem design, including detailed fabrication and assembly drawing development
  • Designing fluid component groups (i.e. solenoid valves, regulators, pressure vessels) including specification, procurement, and processing
  • Participation in the entire design cycle of fluid subsystems including conceptual design, thermo-fluid modeling, structural layout and analysis, integration, commissioning, and activation
  • Prepare plans and specifications in conjunction with other project team members for construction packages
  • Assist in the review of vendor/contractor submittals, Requests for Information (RFIs) and change orders to bring product design from engineering phase to be completed construction
  • Perform trade studies, market research, life cycle cost assessments, feasibility studies, and conceptual design
  • Project planning, scheduling, cost estimating, and material takeoffs
  • Monitor and report weekly on the status of all current design projects, design schedule, and actual cost
  • Support site sustainability initiatives and energy goals
  • Assist other departments as needed with engineering support

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from an ABET accredited university
  • 0-8 years of experience with aerospace, industrial, commercial, or government engineering practices
  • Familiar with design of fluid systems, gas systems, and components
  • Working knowledge of piping, valves, regulators, and fittings
  • Knowledge of fabrication, integration processes and quality control
  • Working knowledge of materials and treatments
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) designation or Professional Engineering (PE) licensure, or desire to obtain within 1-4 years
  • Knowledge of and application of current industry standards, such as, but not limited to: ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII, ASME B31.3 Process Piping, ASHRAE 90.1, International Building Code, International Plumbing Code, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior knowledge of NASA site and experience government installations preferred
  • Experience with Creo Parametric, PTC Windchill, FLUENT, ANSYS, Flowmaster, MathCad, Autopipe, CAD and/or Winplot
  • Knowledge of software/codes (Visual BASIC, FORTRAN, C, etc.) a plus
  • Experience in design of piping systems or knowledge of process piping standards (ASME B31.3)
  • Good organizational and planning skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Knowledge of environmental and sustainability best practices and executive orders
  • Ability to work independently but follow specific detailed instructions
  • Ability to interface with various levels of personnel in a multi-cultural, team-oriented environment
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint) is required
