About the position

The Mechanical Engineer I position is an entry-level role that involves performing routine engineering functions on assigned projects or sub-projects of a general nature and limited scope. The role requires the application of standard mathematical, physical science, and engineering technologies to complete assignments under detailed instructions. The engineer will assist in the design and project management of new and current projects, products, programs, components, tools, and acceptance equipment, all under the technical guidance of higher-level engineers or departmental management. In this role, the engineer will participate in establishing operating procedures for new products and components, assist in developing test procedures, and perform routine to moderately complex engineering evaluation tests. This includes conducting product and process capability studies, quality audits, and product or project data reviews. The engineer will evaluate opportunities for defect prevention based on standard or accepted solutions and prepare evaluation reports that analyze discrepancies, making recommendations for improvements in productivity and quality. Additionally, the Mechanical Engineer I will assist in preparing product or project definitions, manufacturing drawings, specifications, and test equipment designs. They will define and acquire tooling, gauging, and other equipment necessary to manufacture and inspect parts to ensure product quality. The role also involves interacting with design agencies, suppliers, and internal organizations to resolve design, development, production, and acceptance issues, while providing technical assistance in the assigned field. The engineer will evaluate and recommend technological advances that improve productivity and quality, reduce flowtime, and enhance operational surety.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the design and/or project/process management of new and current projects, products, programs, components, tools and acceptance equipment under technical guidance of higher level engineers or departmental management.
  • Participates in establishing operating procedures on new products and components.
  • Assists in the development of test procedures and performance of routine to moderately complex engineering evaluation tests, product and process capability studies, quality audits, product or project data reviews, and other engineering evaluation work.
  • Evaluates opportunities for defect prevention based on standard or accepted solutions.
  • Prepares evaluation reports, analyzes discrepancies, and makes recommendations for product, test equipment, procedures and manufacturing or operating processes that improve productivity and quality and reduce flowtime.
  • Assists in the preparation of product or project definitions, manufacturing drawings and specifications, and test equipment designs.
  • Defines and acquires tooling, gauging and other equipment necessary to manufacture/inspect parts to assure product quality.
  • Interacts with design agencies, suppliers and/or internal organizations to assist in resolving design, development, productions and acceptance issues.
  • Provides technical assistance in appropriate assigned field.
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations regarding technological advances that improve productivity and quality, reduce flowtime, and enhance operational surety.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program or a bachelor's of science degree in Physics from an accredited program.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
  • Ability to work remote, hybrid, or on-site as directed by management and determined by the needs of the business.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this job.
  • United States Citizenship.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous relevant internship experience or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience with machining and/or manufacturing processes.
