About the position

The Mechanical Engineer II at Global Technical Systems (GTS) is responsible for providing technical support and original design inputs for complex mechanical systems and subsystems. This role involves the development of new products from concept through production, as well as the redesign and modification of existing systems. The engineer will perform analyses, trade studies, and provide technical input to specifications, while collaborating with various teams to enhance product processes and resolve technical issues.

Responsibilities

  • Provides original design inputs to the development of complex mechanical engineering projects.
  • Supports investigations and engineering evaluations of highly complex projects and products.
  • Evaluates vendor capabilities for providing the required level of performance of products and/or services.
  • Works with team members, including other engineering disciplines and program management, to transfer ideas into core product processes, facilitate/implement design ideas, and improve existing products.
  • Interacts with customers, vendors, engineers, production personnel, and program management to successfully complete projects.
  • Provides technical consultation to the engineering team.
  • Provides contributions to both system level and module definition.
  • Prepares requirements documents and detailed specifications to define and allocate requirements to systems and system components.
  • Works with teams of highly skilled professionals to research, design, and develop new and complex systems and architectures.
  • Considers approaches and techniques for rapid prototyping, full scale (production) development and test.
  • Participates in technical discussions to develop product ideas and resolve problems.
  • Conducts technical research to understand alternate approaches to a problem and/or technical issues.
  • Originates design documents and concept papers consistent with project efforts for review by senior members of the technical staff.
  • Performs engineering calculations, analyses, and simulations as required.
  • Utilizes Computer-Aided Design tools to capture, document, and validate design artifacts where applicable.
  • Reviews drawings and technical papers for compliance with project/program requirements.
  • Creates and manages Bill of Materials (BOMs).
  • Manages multiple projects simultaneously and reports project status as needed to management.
  • Provides tutoring/mentoring to junior members of the technical staff.

Requirements

  • 3-7 years relevant engineering experience in a mechanical engineering discipline.
  • Ability to prepare and present technical information.
  • Experience and proficiency using Computer-Aided Design tools (e.g., Inventor, SolidWorks) and Finite Element Analysis software as applicable.
  • Strong organizational skills; demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Good understanding of mechanical engineering in area of expertise, and capability to support other mechanical engineering related disciplines.
  • Ability to work both independently and in highly collaborative teams.
  • Ability to accurately articulate concepts, theories and system design attributes to technical team members.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DoD security clearance.
