About the position

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is a prestigious research facility that plays a vital role in the study of the universe. The Observatory operates a variety of radio telescopes, including the renowned Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico, the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile. These telescopes are among the most advanced in the world, enabling astronomers to explore the universe in unprecedented detail. NRAO is seeking a Mechanical Engineer III to join the team at the Very Large Array, located 50 miles west of Socorro, NM. The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for conducting engineering analysis, design, and the overall execution of projects or entire systems. This position is primarily self-directed, requiring the Engineer to manage projects from conception through to completion. Responsibilities include making recommendations, coordinating efforts, and assisting in decisions regarding design, procurement, manufacturing, erection, testing, and initial operation of systems. The successful candidate will work both independently and collaboratively within a dynamic team environment. General duties include participating in the fabrication of test control apparatus and equipment, determining methods and conditions for testing, and ensuring that manufacturing and operational testing conform to functional specifications. The Engineer will also work with other NRAO groups to identify and solve problems, coordinate the operation and maintenance of site equipment, and assist in preparing cost estimates and timelines for projects. Safety is a priority, and the Engineer will be expected to follow safety procedures and correct unsafe practices as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the fabrication of test control apparatus and equipment, determining methods, procedures, and conditions for testing.
  • Ensure manufacturing, construction installation, and operational testing conform to functional specifications and requirements.
  • Work with other NRAO groups, engineers, and technicians to identify and solve problems.
  • Coordinate and direct operation, maintenance, and repair of all site equipment, systems, and support systems.
  • Assist in preparing cost estimates, timelines, and other related analyses of projects.
  • Make recommendations for procedures, equipment purchases, and other improvements.
  • Follow safety procedures and comply with the safety manual.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, or a related engineering field.
  • At least three years of related mechanical engineering experience.
  • Hands-on experience diagnosing and analyzing industrial equipment issues and/or modifications.
  • Good understanding of mechanical systems and hands-on experience working with those systems, including engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and servo systems.
  • Experience with facilities engineering and construction is a plus.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced degree in a related engineering field.
  • Four or more years of related mechanical engineering experience.
