About the position

The Mechanical Engineer Intern position at Peabody is designed for students pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. This summer internship program aims to provide hands-on experience in the engineering department, focusing on the development, design, and testing of mechanical components and systems used in mining equipment. Interns will have the opportunity to learn about the business, contribute to key assignments, and gain valuable insights into the industry while supporting Peabody's mission and values.

Responsibilities

  • Visibly support and champion Peabody's Mission and Values.
  • Act in accordance with and adhere to Safety as a Way of Life Management System.
  • Assist with research, develop, design and test mechanical components and systems for use in mining equipment.
  • Research and propose mechanical design using drafting tools or Computer-Assisted Design (CAD) or drafting equipment software.
  • Partner with other departments to specify type and size of hydraulic components and fittings, structural members, bearings, gearing, heat transfer and engine related environment.
  • Research, design, assist with install, test, analyze and maintain machined parts, castings, weld fabrications, and other components of mechanical systems and processes to meet requirements.
  • Compute and estimate loading on structural members, air/hydraulic flow velocity rates, cylinder speeds, steering system calculations, pump inlet conditions, and heat transfer calculations for air/hydraulic/fuel flow systems.
  • Assist with root cause analysis (RCA).
  • Conduct safety observations and audits monthly.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Company.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar field.
  • Legally authorized to work in the US.
  • Excellent communication, technical and presentation skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; energy; initiative; innovation; organizational, communication and decision-making skills.
  • Past work experiences as a summer intern is a plus.
  • Basic skills with AutoCad or other similar 3D drafting software preferred.
  • Candidates must be geographically mobile.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Products.
