About the position

The Mechanical Engineer IV is a pivotal role responsible for the mechanical design of new products, particularly in the medical and industrial imaging systems sectors. This position requires a deep understanding of product requirements, allowing the engineer to lead the development of innovative product designs that align with these specifications. The Mechanical Engineer IV will oversee the mechanical development process, guiding the work of Mechanical Designers and representing the mechanical discipline on various project teams. This role involves conceptualizing, designing, analyzing, and testing mechanical components and assemblies, ensuring that all designs meet the necessary product requirements and industry standards. In addition to design responsibilities, the Mechanical Engineer IV will be tasked with approving final product designs and providing technical guidance to junior Mechanical Engineers. The role also encompasses the research and development of new mechanical, opto/electro/mechanical, and materials technologies, which are crucial for future product innovations. The engineer will define, plan, coordinate, and execute tasks for innovation projects, leading to the testing and demonstration of prototypes that can transition into product development projects. The Mechanical Engineer IV will also play a significant role in sustaining support for existing product lines, addressing manufacturing or field issues, and assisting Sustaining Engineers with design intent and validation of proposed changes. Furthermore, this position is responsible for the overall quality and timeliness of mechanical designs, leading improvements in design, manufacturing, and assembly processes, and contributing to the development of departmental procedures. Regular attendance and participation in team meetings and training assignments are essential components of this role.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for mechanical design of new products.
  • Represent the mechanical discipline on project teams and be accountable for mechanical project deliverables.
  • Develop new product designs that meet product requirements; create concept designs, evaluate trade-offs, and communicate design status with Project Managers and project teams.
  • Perform various forms of analysis necessary to develop a robust design that meets product requirements, including structural (FEA), thermal (CFD), tolerance, torque values, etc.
  • Document and communicate analytical results with the project teams.
  • Coordinate work with Mechanical Designers to transform design concepts into component and assembly models/drawings; direct and review Mechanical Designers tasks.
  • Approve models and drawings, certifying that a design meets all product requirements and industry standards.
  • Provide technical advice and assistance to junior Mechanical Engineers.
  • Responsible for design documentation and ensuring compliance with quality systems, including creation of BOM, solid models, detail drawings, and mechanical items in the design history file.
  • Interface with Manufacturing and Quality Engineers on the implementation of new product designs into production.
  • Provide support and technical direction to Test Engineers for mechanical aspects of design verification testing; perform engineering testing of prototype assemblies and write test reports.
  • Lead the research and development of new mechanical, opto-mechanical, electro-mechanical, and materials technologies for future products.
  • Provide sustaining support for existing product lines, including analysis of or developing solutions for manufacturing or field issues.
  • Lead the improvement of design, manufacturing, and assembly processes.
  • Provide training, assistance, and help coordinating work of Mechanical Engineers, Mechanical Designers, and Interns.

Requirements

  • Bachelors of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related field with more than ten (10+) years of experience, or a Master of Science or Doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related field with more than eight (8+) years of experience in mechanical, opto-mechanical, or electro-mechanical design required.
  • Expert level of proficiency with computer aided drafting (CAD) software, preferably SolidWorks, to model parts/assemblies and create drawings.
  • Strong knowledge of optical design formulas, optical materials, coatings, adhesives, sealing techniques, and mechanical constraints of opto-mechanical designs.
  • High level of proficiency with computer simulation, preferably in SolidWorks, especially finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
  • Expert level proficiency with industry accepted drafting standards, including ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
  • High level of proficiency with medical device quality system regulations and standards (e.g., U.S. FDA Quality System Regulation 21CFR Part 820, ISO13485/ISO9001, IEC60601).
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize to effectively manage multiple and disparate demands.
