About the position

The Mechanical Engineer position at Johnson Controls focuses on the development of water-based fire protection products within the New Product Introduction (NPI) team at the Cranston, RI R&D facility. The role involves designing, prototyping, and testing fire protection systems to ensure compliance with international standards, while also contributing to the overall safety and efficiency of building systems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop water-based fire protection products or system concepts and detailed designs.
  • Generate and test prototypes to international standards.
  • Conduct detailed studies to support design decisions.
  • Maintain records of the design process in accordance with sound design practice and ISO requirements.
  • Analyze product and equipment specifications to support initial design direction.
  • Maintain knowledge of the company's manufacturing operations to inform design concepts.
  • Conduct feasibility, cost, optimization, stress, fluids, and thermal analyses.
  • Provide technical information regarding manufacturing techniques, materials, and process advantages.
  • Stay updated on technology developments for product and service improvements.
  • Collaborate with research personnel and other technical functions to resolve design issues.
  • Prepare and direct the creation of design layouts, detailed drawings, and specifications.
  • Direct and coordinate prototype efforts.
  • Compile and analyze operational, test, and research data to evaluate performance standards.
  • Plan, develop, conduct, and oversee experimental test programs.
  • Prepare and present reports and presentations as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, fire protection engineering, or a related technical discipline from an accredited university.
  • A minimum of 6 years relevant experience in mechanical piping and water supply products design.
  • Self-directed with the ability to strategize on test plans without established protocols.
  • Experience with mechanical design software such as AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks, or similar.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite Applications (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and Internet software.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree preferred.
  • 10+ years relevant experience in mechanical piping and water supply products design, with at least 3 years focused on sprinkler design.
