About the position

The Mechanical Engineer IV position involves performing complex professional engineering work related to the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of mechanical equipment and systems. This role also includes reviewing and analyzing plans and specifications to ensure compliance with relevant code requirements. The position is based in Hilo, HI, within the Department of Water Supply's Operations Division, and there is one immediate permanent full-time vacancy available. The selected candidate will be responsible for a variety of tasks that require both office and field studies of proposed projects, making recommendations on the design, type, selection, and location of equipment to be installed. In this role, the engineer will conduct preliminary and final acceptance tests of pumping units, as well as periodic tests to assess the operational efficiency of existing pumping units, recommending corrective actions as necessary. The engineer will also check plans and specifications for mechanical equipment and appurtenances, supervise and compile pumping and other data, and analyze indicator cards of steam engines to make required adjustments. Additionally, the engineer will analyze station reports and operating schedules, requisition supplies and equipment, and review plans and specifications for compliance with plumbing, mechanical, and other pertinent codes. The position requires the ability to apply mechanical engineering principles, interpret and modify guidelines to solve specific problems, and prepare engineering reports and correspondence. The engineer will also need to interact effectively with engineers, architects, and the public, ensuring that all technical interpretations of codes are accurately conveyed. The role may involve physical demands, and candidates must meet health and physical condition standards necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Perform difficult professional engineering work in the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of mechanical equipment and systems.
  • Review and analyze plans and specifications for mechanical engineering features and compliance with code requirements.
  • Conduct preliminary and final acceptance tests of pumping units.
  • Conduct periodic tests to determine operational efficiency of existing pumping units and recommend corrective actions as required.
  • Check plans and specifications of mechanical equipment and appurtenances.
  • Supervise and compile pumping and other data.
  • Analyze indicator cards of steam engines and make adjustments as required.
  • Analyze station reports and operating schedules.
  • Requisition supplies and equipment.
  • Review plans and specifications pertaining to mechanical engineering features for compliance with plumbing, mechanical, and other pertinent code requirements.
  • Analyze design of piping, air conditioning, refrigerating, heating, and other related systems.
  • Check and verify correctness of calculations, determinations, and assumptions as to requirements, load limits, safety allowances, etc.
  • Meet and confer with architects and engineers on matters concerning technical interpretation of codes.
  • Approve or reject plumbing permits upon review of designs, plans, and specifications.
  • Serve as consultant to department personnel engaged in the inspection of plumbing construction work.
  • Prepare technical reports and correspondence.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering.
  • Three (3) years of professional mechanical engineering experience.
  • Possession of a certificate of registration as a professional mechanical engineer in the State of Hawai'i at the time of filing.
  • Possession of a valid State of Hawai`i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at the time of filing.
