About the position

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) is seeking a Mechanical Engineer specializing in Propulsion to join our dynamic team in Poway, California. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of cutting-edge remotely piloted aircraft and advanced propulsion systems. As a member of the Propulsion Systems Mechanical Engineering Department, you will be involved in the design, development, testing, and integration of turbine and piston propulsion engines, along with their associated systems such as fuel, oil, cooling, and pneumatic systems. Your work will play a crucial role in ensuring the reliability and performance of our aircraft, which are at the forefront of technological innovation in the aerospace industry. In this role, you will be responsible for conceptualizing and articulating innovative solutions to complex engineering challenges. You will lead and guide research efforts to solve engineering problems, providing mentorship to junior engineers and support staff. Your expertise will be essential in providing field service support as a subject matter expert on propulsion systems and their components. You will also interact with senior-level personnel, preparing and presenting design reviews and technical materials to executive management. This position requires a commitment to safety and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, ensuring that all engineering practices align with established operating procedures. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in mechanical or aerospace engineering, with direct experience in aircraft propulsion systems and fluid conveyance systems. You will need to demonstrate a working knowledge of fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and military standards, as well as proficiency in CAD modeling and drafting. This role is not only about technical expertise but also about collaboration and communication, as you will be working closely with various teams to achieve strategic objectives and timelines.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the design, development, test, and integration of propulsion engines and associated systems such as fuel, oil, cooling and pneumatic for remotely piloted aircraft.
  • Conceptualize and articulate innovative solutions to highly technical and complex engineering problems, including strategic objectives and timing.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and guidance for research into the solution of engineering problems.
  • Provide field service support by acting as a subject matter expert for the propulsion systems and associated components on the aircraft.
  • Mentor professional and support staff in technical and professional growth.
  • Interact with senior level internal and external personnel on technical matters requiring coordination between organizations.
  • Prepare and present design reviews and other technical materials to executive management.
  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.
  • Will work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree, master's degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; six or more years of experience with a bachelor's degree, four or more years of experience with a master's degree, or two or more years with a PhD.
  • Direct experience with aircraft propulsion systems and associated fluid conveyance systems.
  • Working knowledge of fluid dynamics, heat transfer, aircraft utility functions, and propulsion systems.
  • Understanding of military standards, specs, and configuration control.
  • Customer focused; development of innovative new designs and solutions that meet customer requirements.
  • Experience with FAR, EASA, or other airworthiness certification.
  • Working knowledge of CAD modeling (Unigraphics NX), and drafting.
  • Familiarity with GD&T per ASME Y14.5 and tolerance stack up methodology.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOD security clearance is required.
  • Able to work off-hours as required.
