About the position

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) is seeking a Mechanical Engineer specializing in Propulsion Systems to join our team in San Diego, CA. This role is pivotal in the development of cutting-edge remotely piloted aircraft, where the engineer will be responsible for integrating turbine and piston propulsion engines into various aircraft. The successful candidate will work within the Propulsion Systems Mechanical Engineering Department, contributing to the design, development, testing, and integration of propulsion engines and their associated systems, including fuel, oil, cooling, and pneumatic systems. This position requires a strong ability to conceptualize and articulate innovative solutions to complex engineering challenges, ensuring that strategic objectives and timelines are met. In this role, the engineer will provide leadership and guidance for research into engineering problems, acting as a subject matter expert for propulsion systems and associated components. The position also involves mentoring junior staff, preparing and presenting design reviews, and interacting with senior-level personnel on technical matters that require coordination across various organizations. The engineer will be expected to adhere to all applicable laws and regulations while maintaining a safe working environment. Responsibilities

  • Participate in the design, development, test, and integration of propulsion engines and associated systems such as fuel, oil, cooling and pneumatic for remotely piloted aircraft.
  • Conceptualize and articulate innovative solutions to highly technical and complex engineering problems, including strategic objectives and timing.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and guidance for research into the solution of engineering problems.
  • Provide field service support by acting as a subject matter expert for the propulsion systems and associated components on the aircraft.
  • Mentor professional and support staff in technical and professional growth.
  • Interact with senior level internal and external personnel on technical matters requiring coordination between organizations.
  • Prepare and present design reviews and other technical materials to executive management.
  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.
  • Will work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree, master's degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; six or more years of experience with a bachelor's degree, four or more years of experience with a master's degree, or two or more years with a PhD.
  • Direct experience with aircraft propulsion systems and associated fluid conveyance systems.
  • Working knowledge of fluid dynamics, heat transfer, aircraft utility functions, and propulsion systems.
  • Understanding of military standards, specs, and configuration control.
  • Customer focused; development of innovative new designs and solutions that meet customer requirements.
  • Experience with FAR, EASA, or other airworthiness certification.
  • Working knowledge of CAD modeling (Unigraphics NX), and drafting.
  • Familiarity with GD&T per ASME Y14.5 and tolerance stack up methodology.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOD security clearance is required.
  • Able to work off-hours as required.
