About the position

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our team focused on developing innovative robotic devices for various applications in medical, military, and scientific research. The role involves engaging in all phases of design and engineering, including requirements analysis, concept generation, mechanical design, implementation, testing, and documentation. The ideal candidate will work on multiple projects of moderate size or segments of larger projects, contributing to the design and development of complex mechanical systems.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in all aspects of design and engineering including requirements analysis, concept generation, mechanical design, implementation, testing, and documentation.
  • Utilize strong robotics fundamentals including kinematics, dynamics, statics, and sensing.
  • Conduct 3D mechanical CAD design, preferably using Solidworks.
  • Draft production drawings for machined parts, fabrications, weldments, COTS parts, and assemblies.
  • Perform static and dynamic structural analysis using hand calculations and finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Optimize material selection for strength, weight, cost, and performance.
  • Understand machining and manufacturing processes to optimize cost without sacrificing performance.
  • Conceptualize and implement the design of complex mechanisms.
  • Design and conduct experiments, analyze and interpret data, and formulate and solve problems.
  • Support and communicate the mission, values, and culture of the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college with 5 years related experience; or a Master's degree with 1-3 years related experience.
  • Experience with machine design, sensors, transmissions, electric motors, bearings, and kinematic linkages.
  • Hands-on debugging experience.
  • Strong understanding of robotics fundamentals.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with robotics/mechatronics.
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience with finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Experience with sizing actuators, including the design of custom motors and transmissions.
  • Experience with strain gauges and load cells.
  • Familiarity with sensors such as hall-effect, angular position, and temperature sensors.
