About the position

The Mechanical Engineer (Senior) position at the FAA's Office of Facility Management involves planning and executing complex projects related to the design and maintenance of mechanical systems in new construction and renovation of facilities. The role requires a high level of expertise in mechanical engineering principles, particularly in HVAC systems, plumbing, and fire protection, while ensuring compliance with energy efficiency standards and green building initiatives. The engineer will also mentor junior engineers and manage projects, providing technical guidance and oversight.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and accomplish complex projects and programs under minimal direction.
  • Serve as a senior mechanical engineer for new construction and renovation of facilities.
  • Provide management guidance on mechanical system designs that align with high-performance building standards.
  • Design and maintain mechanical systems in support of construction and infrastructure projects.
  • Create design and construction documents using CAD software like AutoCAD.
  • Perform regular inspections and maintenance of mechanical systems to ensure efficiency and safety.
  • Conduct mechanical and energy audits to ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Utilize energy design systems software to model renewable energy systems.
  • Prepare project plans, schedules, deliverables, and requirements as a project manager.
  • Mentor less experienced mechanical engineers and conduct development sessions.
  • Review architecture and engineering consultants' work for compliance with program requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program or equivalent education and experience.
  • Professional registration as a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.).
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-I (FG/GS-13) level in facilities mechanical systems design and construction.
  • Experience leading major project teams and providing mentoring and guidance in facilities electrical engineering.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with energy efficiency standards and regulations.
  • Familiarity with building codes and FAA's energy policies.
  • Knowledge of new technologies and methodologies in mechanical engineering.
