About the position

The Mechanical Engineer position at the Department of Commerce involves planning and executing engineering research assignments in semiconductor XCT defect artifact fabrication. The role requires collaboration with NIST colleagues to design, fabricate, and characterize defect artifacts, as well as analyzing image data to extract meaningful information aligned with research goals. This position is part of a competitive service and offers a full-time term appointment for three years.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and carry out engineering research assignments in semiconductor XCT defect artifact fabrication.
  • Collaborate with NIST colleagues to design, fabricate, and characterize defect artifacts in the NIST NanoFab cleanroom or other facilities.
  • Characterize defective semiconductor materials using techniques such as FIB cross-sectioning, mechanical polishing, SEM, and OM measurements.
  • Perform nondestructive XCT measurements and implement XCT reconstruction and defect detection algorithms.
  • Analyze image data to extract meaningful information aligned with research goals.
  • Organize, process, and prepare measured data sets for publication.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program or equivalent education and experience.
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 grade level in the Federal service.
  • Professional registration or licensure as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with semiconductor fabrication techniques.
  • Familiarity with XCT measurement techniques.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
