About the position

Leidos is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join the Security Enterprise Solutions (SES) business unit in Vista, CA. This unit specializes in designing and manufacturing advanced security equipment utilized at border crossings, airports, seaports, and various transportation mechanisms. The products developed include radiation detectors, spectrometers, X-ray and gamma-ray scanners for vehicles, and CT explosives detection systems for airline baggage. The primary objective of this position is to enhance existing designs and introduce innovative products to the extensive line of security detection equipment. The products being developed are groundbreaking and aim to improve safety, health, and efficiency in global travel and trade. In this role, the Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the mechanical structures associated with both large and small electromechanical systems and subsystems. Key responsibilities include identifying components, communicating with vendors, and providing analytical suggestions for component selections. The engineer will perform mechanical engineering duties related to the planning and design of mechanical structures, environmental enclosures, tools, machines, and other mechanically functioning equipment. Additionally, the role involves overseeing the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment such as non-intrusive inspection X-Ray systems. Effective communication with internal team members across various engineering disciplines is essential. The Mechanical Engineer will join the product development team, providing expertise for key component design requirements and leading preliminary and critical design reviews for subsystems during the product development process. Collaboration with a team of scientists and engineers is crucial to develop proof of concept, prototype, and production-ready systems. The engineer will also create and maintain specifications, ensuring that documents are well-developed, accurate, and consistent, while adhering to established Leidos internal processes and practices.

Responsibilities

  • Mechanical structures associated with large and small electromechanical systems and sub-systems.
  • Identify components, communicate with vendors, and provide analytical suggestions for component selections.
  • Perform mechanical engineering duties in planning and designing of mechanical structures, environmental enclosures, tools, machines, and other mechanically functioning equipment.
  • Oversee installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment such as non-intrusive inspection X-Ray systems.
  • Communicate effectively with internal team members across multiple engineering areas.
  • Join the product development team and provide expertise for key component design requirements.
  • Lead preliminary and critical design reviews for subsystems during product development process.
  • Collaborate with a team of scientists and engineers to develop proof of concept, prototype, and production-ready systems.
  • Create and maintain specifications ensuring documents are well developed, accurate, and consistent.
  • Adhere to existing/established Leidos internal processes and practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with 4+ years of relevant experience or Master's degree with 2+ years of experience. Additional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance (US citizenship required).
  • Hands-on experience with defining and implementing formal design documentation for mechanical engineering designs including assembly and detail drawings, BOM's, and 3D CAD modeling.
  • Strong communication skills, including writing and presentation skills.
  • Good documentation and process discipline with close attention to details.
  • Proficient with SolidWorks part, assembly, and mechanical drawing designs.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Excellent analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient understanding of Engineering Mechanics (Static and Dynamics) and Heat Transfer.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks based on guidance and direction from the engineering manager.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to travel abroad, typically 10%.

Nice-to-haves

  • Understanding of Engineering Change Order process (ECR, ECO, ECN).
  • Experience doing Finite Element Analysis.
  • Knowledge of materials and material properties associated with outdoor platforms and electronic enclosures.
  • Strong understanding of metal fabrication processes such as machining, sheet-metal & welding.
  • Familiarity with corrosion protection techniques and materials finishing processes.
  • Ability to effectively apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (ANSI Y14.5).
  • Experience with X-Ray device shielding and collimation.
