About the position

The Mechanical Engineer at Special Metals Corporation is responsible for overseeing engineering activities that enhance safety, quality, and productivity in the maintenance of plant equipment. This role is crucial in driving continuous improvements to equipment availability and throughput, ensuring that the operations run smoothly and efficiently. The engineer will be involved in safety design modifications and improvements to equipment and facilities, ensuring that all engineering practices align with safety standards and regulations. In addition to safety modifications, the Mechanical Engineer will conduct safety investigations and implement corrective actions to address any identified issues. A significant part of the role involves developing, documenting, and improving preventive maintenance programs aimed at enhancing equipment availability and throughput. The engineer will also focus on predictive maintenance programs, utilizing techniques such as vibration analysis and thermo-graphic imaging to anticipate equipment failures before they occur. Technical support is a key aspect of this position, as the engineer will troubleshoot equipment failures and assist maintenance teams in returning equipment to operational status, thereby minimizing downtime and production losses. The role requires analyzing production delay data to establish or modify preventive maintenance tasks and generating continuous improvement projects based on this data. The Mechanical Engineer will prepare and review equipment failure/root cause analysis reports, evaluate corrective action items, and assess their impact on preventive maintenance programs. Furthermore, the engineer will develop cost justifications for improvement projects and corrective actions, create detailed work orders for implementing these projects, and coordinate with outside contractors to ensure minimal disruption to production. The role also includes critical spare parts assessments, parts standardization, and the development of standard operating procedures, training, and skill development for personnel. Finally, the engineer will determine and install performance metrics that promote long-term continuous improvement programs within the organization.
