About the position

As a solutions-based company, Precise Systems is focused on innovation in support of the warfighters and aligning our expertise to deliver the highest quality of service. Powered by our highly skilled workforces, we provide expert consultation on network and weapons systems acquisition programs, maintenance/modernization programs, and sustainment programs with solutions in Digital Transformation, Advanced Engineering, Physical Sciences Research, Platform Lifecycle Support, and Technical Services. Since our establishment, we have demonstrated and perfected our ability to manage the customer's needs, no matter how complex - offering exceptional service and the Precise solution. Precise Systems seeks to immediately hire a full-time Mechanical Engineer to join a diverse, multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers. The team includes personnel at NRL's headquarters in Washington, DC (NRLDC), NRL's blue-water test facility in Key West, FL (NRLKW), as well as offsite personnel from other Navy facilities and collaborating companies in private industry. Work may occur in the office, the laboratory, or the field (including, potentially, shipboard work), as necessary. The job will be based in Key West, FL, but occasional travel to perform work at NRLDC may be required. The candidate will work as a member of the technical team performing research, development, and testing in a research facility focused on addressing problems in corrosion, marine fouling, mechanical testing of Naval hardware, and general mechanical design. Hands-on work manufacturing, assembling, and testing is fundamental to the position. Candidates must be able to work with cross-functional groups (scientists, engineers, technicians, customers, and industry partners) to develop, test, and transition products or technologies to practical fleet applications and solutions. The role requires working as part of a development team and seeing projects through initial concept, writing proposals, executing tests, evaluating experimental results, and formally documenting the results as author or co-author. The candidate must be comfortable in handling multiple projects simultaneously.

Responsibilities

  • Perform research, development, and testing in a research facility focused on corrosion, marine fouling, and mechanical design.
  • Manufacture, assemble, and test mechanical systems and components.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional groups to develop and transition products or technologies to practical applications.
  • Work as part of a development team, seeing projects through from initial concept to execution and documentation.
  • Handle multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely completion and quality results.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a design or shop environment.
  • Strong mechanical design and analysis skills.
  • Fluency in the latest 3-D CAD techniques and software.
  • Experience in designing and building large mechanical test systems.
  • Proficiency with mechanical, electrical, and industrial systems including sensors and data collection.
  • Skill and experience in Hydraulics, Mechanisms, Control Systems, Structures, and Materials.
  • Experience in specifications of mechanical systems and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
  • Hands-on mechanical aptitude.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with large scale mechanical testing apparatus.
  • Proficient in Solidworks, Matlab, Labview, or similar software packages.
  • Proficiency in Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
  • Experience with vendor search, specification, and selection.
  • Knowledge of fracture mechanics, fatigue, welding, casting, and heat treatment.
  • Working knowledge of electrical design and fabrication.
  • Functional knowledge of industrial specifications such as ASTM, AWS, SAE, API, and MIL.
  • Interest in learning new skills to support other areas within the branch.
