About the position

Stantec is seeking a Mechanical Designer to join their team, focusing on the design of HVAC systems across various sectors including commercial, hospitality, and education. The role involves working independently on multiple projects, collaborating with senior engineers, and ensuring compliance with engineering standards and codes. Responsibilities

  • Design heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for assigned projects throughout all phases of the project lifecycle.
  • Work independently on multiple projects with varying levels of supervision, collaborating with design colleagues to develop documentation for new construction and renovation projects.
  • Participate in client meetings to establish design criteria and review design progress.
  • Evaluate, select, specify, and engineer mechanical systems or products for projects with assistance from senior staff on complex projects.
  • Develop designs through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats.
  • Utilize BIM technologies to create three-dimensional models of mechanical systems.
  • Prepare and revise documentation in various mechanical phases including site plans, floor plans, diagrams, and details.
  • Participate in coordination meetings with internal team members and external consultants, contractors, and vendors.
  • Support the preparation and coordination of project specifications with construction documents.
  • Delegate basic design-level tasks to BIM technicians and junior staff when appropriate.
  • Assist in developing new standards and specifications for the mechanical group.
  • Conduct field surveys of existing conditions, prepare field reports, and compile punch lists at project closeout.
  • Evaluate designs to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local codes, and client design standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant working experience in designing Mechanical/HVAC systems.
  • EIT working toward licensure required; Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and plumbing codes, energy codes, ASHRAE standards, and other building codes.
  • Strong understanding of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to communicate ideas effectively and collaborate in a project team setting.
  • Demonstrated creativity, foresight, and mature engineering judgment in problem-solving.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to write clear technical reports.
  • Ability to handle multiple ongoing projects in a dynamic environment.
  • Proficiency in standard computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam, Autodesk AutoCAD, and Autodesk Revit.
  • Knowledge of software for heating/cooling load calculations, such as Trane Trace, Carrier HAP, or IES.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with BIM technologies and three-dimensional modeling.
  • Familiarity with construction administration processes.
  • Previous experience in client-facing roles.
