About the position

The Mechanical Designer at American Woodmark plays a crucial role in supporting technical projects across the company. This position involves conducting automation research and applying mechanical design principles to develop solutions that enhance AWC processes. The Mechanical Designer is responsible for creating components and specification drawings necessary for manufacturing AWC finished goods in both production and research and development environments. The role requires collaboration with corporate and plant engineers during product development, ensuring that dimensional and CAD standards are met while optimizing manufacturing processes. The Mechanical Designer will also contribute to the Automation Group's strategy by designing jigs, fixtures, tooling, and components for both small and large equipment. This position is integral to improving design processes and leading engineering transitions, ensuring that all deliverables meet the construction and performance standards set by the Project Engineering team.

Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the implementation of technical solutions.
  • Responsible for creating solid models and specification drawings for all new components and finished good products.
  • Produces rapid prototypes via 3D printing (metal, plastics, carbon fiber, etc.).
  • Revises existing drawings and models per an engineer's ECN redlines.
  • Troubleshoots basic problems to advanced 3D modeling errors within Autodesk software, including file relationships, constraints, and patterns.
  • Collaborates with corporate and plant engineers during product development, providing input on dimensional/CAD standards and determining best construction.
  • May collaborate with product and quality engineering for product manufacturing process optimization.
  • Contributes to the Automation Group's strategy through design of jigs, fixtures, tooling, Robot/Cobot End of Arm Tooling, and small and large equipment components.
  • Leads projects related to improving design processes, new designs, and large design engineering transitions.
  • Creates and maintains Bill of Material for original designs and revisions.
  • Engages in cross-functional communication with team members to gather and explain design intent.
  • Develops simulations for designed automated equipment, fixtures, and processes.
  • Champions AWC's mission, vision, and values; complies with the policies and procedures, ethical standards, and code of conduct set forth by the company.
  • Maintains construction and performance standards set by the Project Engineering team to provide consistent deliverables.
  • Actively participates on assigned teams and/or projects.
  • Provides a safe and productive work environment, including housekeeping.
  • Performs tasks as directed by the Project Engineering Manager.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in mechanical and/or equipment design or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in 3D CAD software required.
  • 1-2 years relevant work experience in a manufacturing environment strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in 2D & 3D CAD software (i.e. Solidworks, Autodesk Inventor or Fusion).
  • Proficient in MS Word and Excel.
  • Basic knowledge of ERP systems as it pertains to engineering functions.
  • Working knowledge of ANSI / ISO drafting standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong planning, organization, and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in design for 3D printing and rapid prototyping.
  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering (Mechanical, or similar technical degree); relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of education.
  • 2-year degree or equivalent work experience in Drafting or 3D design.
