About the position

The Mechanical Engineering Manager 2 at Northrop Grumman is responsible for leading a team of Mechanical Design Engineers in the Marine Systems engineering sector. This role involves providing technical direction, overseeing production support, and managing engineering tasks related to naval propulsion and power generation systems. The position emphasizes collaboration, team empowerment, and continuous innovation in delivering critical national defense products.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering leadership and technical direction to a Marine Systems engineering team of approximately 13 Mechanical Design Engineers.
  • Oversee production support on products such as Steam Turbine Generators.
  • Lead a diverse team in Machine Design and development.
  • Support development testing and manufacturing of rotating machinery for Naval Propulsion and Power Generation.
  • Manage time keeping, performance reviews, staffing, resource planning, training, and team engagement.
  • Ensure compliance with established design guidelines and processes.
  • Develop and implement the technical roadmap strategy aligned with future business capture strategies.
  • Partner with other engineering managers on skillset development strategies.
  • Drive predictable financial and program results.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in STEM with 8 years of engineering experience; OR a Master's Degree in STEM with 6 years of engineering experience; OR a PhD in STEM with 3 years of engineering experience.
  • US Citizenship required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
  • 2 years' experience managing technical teams.
  • Strong fundamentals in Design Engineering for Rotating Machinery.
  • Experience in technical, program, project, or functional/people management.
  • Production issue resolution experience.
  • Ability to work onsite in Sunnyvale, CA for a minimum of 4 days per week.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering with engineering or technical management experience.
  • Experience as a Technical Lead, Project Manager, or in a leadership role related to program execution.
  • Experience with large scale electric motor and generator design, especially in naval applications.
  • Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) experience.
  • Understanding of Agile (SCRUM) techniques and activities.
  • Knowledge of Design Engineering processes and procedures.
