About the position

At Raytheon, the foundation of everything we do is rooted in our values and a higher calling - to help our nation and allies defend freedoms and deter aggression. We bring the strength of more than 100 years of experience and renowned engineering expertise to meet the needs of today's mission and stay ahead of tomorrow's threat. Our team solves tough, meaningful problems that create a safer, more secure world. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer in Controls and Actuation, you will be responsible for developing technical solutions for a wide range of moving element challenges, such as aerodynamic steering, thrust vectoring, attitude-and-divert maneuvering, pointing, and stabilizing of missile systems and subsystems. Your responsibility will extend across the entire life cycle of the product, from conceptualizing and design, to prototyping and manufacturing, integration and verification testing, through production support. You will be expected to apply sound mechanical engineering principles to solve complex system problems while collaborating with a cross-discipline team including electrical engineering, systems engineering, flight science, manufacturing engineering, supply chain, and others. Specific tasks may include requirements development and comprehension, concept development, trade study evaluation, free-body diagram generation, first order structural and thermal analysis, gear analysis, material assessment and selection, 3D modeling support, datum selection and application of geometric dimensioning and tolerance, tolerance analysis, margin analysis, support of drawing development, support of manufacturing process and build tooling development, support of test process and test equipment development, and participation in design reviews. Day-to-day activities are highly collaborative, both internally across disciplines as well as externally with suppliers. Hands-on opportunities are plentiful, as great emphasis is put on exposing designers to the hardware through participation in prototype building and verification testing, thus enabling firsthand knowledge of system performance. Assigned responsibilities could grow to include a team leadership role of a major hardware subsystem on a specific program, requiring accountability for technical success across disciplines (mechanical, electrical, algorithm, software, integration, etc.), risk management, system integration into the overall final assembly, and adherence to cost and schedule commitments.

Responsibilities

  • Develop technical solutions for moving element challenges in missile systems and subsystems.
  • Extend responsibility across the entire product life cycle from design to production support.
  • Apply mechanical engineering principles to solve complex system problems.
  • Collaborate with cross-discipline teams including electrical engineering, systems engineering, and manufacturing engineering.
  • Conduct requirements development, concept development, and trade study evaluations.
  • Generate free-body diagrams and perform structural and thermal analysis.
  • Support 3D modeling, geometric dimensioning and tolerance, and tolerance analysis.
  • Participate in design reviews and support manufacturing process development.
  • Engage in prototype building and verification testing to gain firsthand knowledge of system performance.
  • Potentially lead a team on a major hardware subsystem, managing technical success and risk.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) with a minimum of 5 years of mechanical engineering experience, or an advanced degree with a minimum of 3 years of experience.
  • Experience in developing actuation drive systems, including power management and motor sizing.
  • Active and transferable U.S. government issued security clearance required prior to start date.
  • U.S. citizenship is required for security clearance eligibility.

Nice-to-haves

  • Twelve (5) years of experience with Systems or Mechanical Engineering of servo controls.
  • Experience with development of CAS requirements and architecture.
  • Familiarity with control actuation systems using permanent magnet brush and brushless DC motor technology.
  • Experience with feedback control systems, including sizing, testing, and integration.
  • Proficient in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing per ASME Y14.5.
  • Ability to deconstruct higher level tasks into discrete lower level work packages.
  • Moderate 3D modeling skills with commercial software packages.
  • Experience with Pro/Engineer/CREO for 3D modeling and mechanical drawing generation.
  • Proficient in using Matlab, Simulink, and dSpace.
  • Knowledge in design and manufacturing of machined parts and related components.
