About the position

Merrick & Company is seeking a college or graduate school Mechanical Engineering student for a paid summer internship for Summer 2025 at our Los Alamos, New Mexico office. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work on rewarding client projects while being exposed to unparalleled training and development opportunities. The summer internship is expected to last from approximately mid-May through mid-August 2025. We will begin accepting resumes for this opportunity from September to November 2024, with resumes being reviewed as they are received. Interviews will take place in the Fall/Winter, and offers will be extended in Winter/Spring, although the timeframe is subject to change. The Merrick Intern Program is designed to provide undergraduate or graduate students with valuable technical experience in the field of mechanical engineering. Interns will have the chance to work on a variety of mechanical engineering tasks, which may include detailed machine design, 3D modeling using CREO (Pro/Engineer), creation of drawings in CREO, sizing of mechanical commercial components, stress analysis of components, and design of piping systems and HVAC/Facilities. Additionally, interns will be exposed to NQA-1 quality requirements, which are essential in the engineering field. This position requires collaboration with other disciplines, the ability to interface with clients and contractors, adherence to schedules and budget commitments, and the capacity to work independently. Strong written and oral communication skills, as well as problem-solving abilities, are essential for success in this role. Attendance and punctuality are also critical expectations for this internship.

Responsibilities

  • Gain technical experience in the field of mechanical engineering.
  • Work on detailed machine design projects.
  • Create 3D models and drawings using CREO (Pro/Engineer).
  • Size mechanical commercial components and perform stress analysis.
  • Assist in the design of piping systems and HVAC/Facilities.
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a college or graduate school program in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Familiarity with 3D modeling software, preferably CREO (Pro/Engineer).
  • Basic understanding of mechanical design principles.
  • Ability to perform stress analysis and sizing of mechanical components.
  • Knowledge of piping systems and HVAC/Facilities design is a plus.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to attendance and punctuality.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with NQA-1 quality requirements.
