About the position

The position involves preparing detailed estimates for mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection trades based on design documents and specifications. The estimator will communicate with various stakeholders, analyze existing site conditions, and develop relationships with suppliers and trade partners to ensure accurate pricing and scope coverage. This role requires collaboration with the design team and project staff to facilitate a smooth transition from preconstruction to operations.

Responsibilities

• Prepare detailed estimates based on design documents, narratives, and specifications for Mechanical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection trades.
• Communicate mechanical estimates and scopes of work to Turner staff, architects, engineers, and owners.
• Prepare quantity take-offs, analysis, estimates, and studies for Mechanical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection items from conceptual design through completed construction documents.
• Analyze existing site conditions and contract documents to determine required scope not already indicated.
• Develop working relationships with local material suppliers and equipment vendors for accurate pricing.
• Develop working relationships with local trade partners to maintain a list of qualified bidders for projects.
• Perform constructability analysis of project documents and communicate issues to the project team.
• Provide first costs analysis and participate in life cycle analysis with the design team.
• Address General Conditions and General Requirements items in estimates.
• Coordinate equipment pricing with SourceBlue for estimates.
• Develop value analysis for cost-efficient alternatives to proposed systems, materials, and equipment.
• Serve as liaison with engineers, design consultants, trade partners, and owner's representatives.
• Prepare estimates and proposals for various contract types including lump sum, GMP, and Cost Plus.
• Participate in estimate reviews with the design team and client.
• Conduct proper transfer of knowledge from Preconstruction to Operations during project hand-off.
• Author scope requisitions for bidding and/or procurement of systems; coordinate with fellow estimators to eliminate scope gaps.
• Evaluate subcontractor proposals and manage risk of scope gaps.
• Assist project staff in evaluating large change orders.
• Gather and analyze bid data for projects using Turner system breakdown sheets.
• Utilize quantification and cost estimating tools and/or software in use by the local business unit.
• May supervise Assistant MEP Estimators, Estimating Assistants, and/or Interns.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or related field.
• Minimum of 3 years related Mechanical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection estimating experience, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Knowledge of Mechanical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection systems.
• Ability to use critical thinking skills for understanding and interpreting contract documents, drawings, specifications, and project schedules.
• Ability to collaborate with vendors, trade partners, and project team members.
• Professional written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient computer skills and Microsoft Office suite of applications.

Nice-to-haves

• Supervisory experience desired.
