About the position

Merrick & Company is seeking a college or graduate school student who is majoring in Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis in thermal, fluid, and/or HVAC systems for a paid internship for Summer 2025 at our Los Alamos, NM office. This internship is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in the field of mechanical engineering, particularly focusing on HVAC and plumbing/piping systems for facilities. The internship will run approximately from mid-May through mid-August 2025, and we will be accepting resumes for this opportunity from September to November 2024. Resumes will be reviewed as they are received, and interviews will take place in the Fall/Winter, with offers extended in Winter/Spring. Please note that the timeframe is subject to change. During the summer internship, the selected candidate will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of engineering tasks and experiences. These will include facility heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) analysis and design, plumbing and piping design, developing design calculations, creating fluid and thermal models, building process flow diagrams, equipment selection, stress analysis, writing specifications, and participating in the QA/QC process. The intern will work closely with other engineering disciplines and will be expected to interface with clients and contractors effectively. The role requires adherence to schedules and budget commitments, the ability to work independently, and strong written and oral communication skills. Problem-solving skills are essential, as is a commitment to attendance and punctuality.

Responsibilities

  • Gain technical experience in mechanical engineering with an emphasis on HVAC and plumbing/piping systems.
  • Conduct facility heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) analysis and design.
  • Engage in plumbing and piping design tasks.
  • Develop design calculations and create fluid and thermal models.
  • Build process flow diagrams and assist in equipment selection.
  • Perform stress analysis and write specifications for projects.
  • Participate in the QA/QC process to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines and interface with clients and contractors.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a college or graduate school program majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Emphasis in thermal, fluid, and/or HVAC systems is preferred.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Commitment to attendance and punctuality.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous internship or co-op experience in mechanical engineering or related field.
  • Familiarity with HVAC systems and plumbing design.
  • Experience with engineering software for modeling and design.
