This is an entry-level position designed to develop technical expertise in a particular area of specialty within Xcel Energy. The successful candidate will perform work that involves conventional types of plans, investigations, surveys, structures, or equipment with relatively few complex features for which there are precedents. The activities are of limited scope and require knowledge of principles and techniques commonly employed in the specific narrow area of assignments. As part of the role, the engineer may lead small to medium, non-critical projects and/or provide field oversight of critical projects under the direction of a higher-level engineer or supervisor. The work will be reviewed for soundness of technical judgment, overall adequacy, and accuracy. As proficiency is gained, the engineer may work on portions of larger projects, always under supervision and following established procedures. There may also be opportunities to supervise or coordinate the work of interns, drafters, craft personnel, technicians, and/or others. The essential responsibilities of this position include using and applying technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques to perform activities and assignments of limited scope. The engineer will support the development of technical documentation, which includes designs, testing, calculations, reports, and standards. They will provide ongoing technical support for project activities within areas such as Operations, Maintenance, Testing/diagnostics, and Regulatory. Additionally, the engineer may provide field engineering oversight for activities such as commissioning, testing, and inspections under direct supervision. The role also involves coordinating or leading projects or portions of projects, including phases such as research, design, equipment selection, procurement support, installation, and commissioning, all under the direction of a higher-level engineer or supervisor. Furthermore, the engineer will support bid/evaluation processes by performing basic analysis and calculations on existing documentation and materials that support the preparation of bid documents. Effective communication with other business areas of the company is essential, as is the ability to exchange information on matters of varying importance and complexity both inter-organizationally and with outside customers/vendors. The engineer may also coordinate the work of interns, drafters, technicians, and others, providing guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers while being responsible for their continuous self-development of technical skills and competencies. Lastly, the engineer may perform activities such as budgeting, estimating, forecasting, accounting, and work order management in support of engineering projects.
